THE BPS LIBRARY is turning 30!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Our school library was officially opened on 27th November 1990.

The library today is a well-resourced space to support our student's reading and learning. Reading is one of the most valuable skills we can learn. At BPS we encourage reading to support our student's love of learning.

Reading opens a gateway for children to find out more about their world around them.

VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE CERTIFICATES

74 students completed the Challenge.
2744 books were read.
2744 books were finished and verified.
308 book reviews were written and published for the state to read from BPS students.

The Little Wave

by Pip Harry

Book Review by Phoebe Grade 5

This book is a lesson in accepting people’s differences and being resilient.

The quote on the front cover is a great message about the book - “Falling down doesn’t mean you can’t get back up.”

The Little Wave is an in-depth look at three Australian kids and their differences. They all have their own passions in life and the beach brings them together.

Noah, Lottie and Jack are the three main characters. Their upbringings and family lives are very different. This book is a great example of how everyone has an individual story to tell from a different situation.

Noah

Lives in the beach suburb of Sydney and he loves surfing. He’s getting bullied by one of his friends and doesn’t know how to stick up for himself.

Lottie

Lives in the same Sydney suburb as Noah and loves insects and bugs. Her Mum passed away over a year ago and her dad isn’t coping with looking after Lottie.

Jack

Lives in the bush and loves cricket. He has never seen the ocean. His mum is going to rehab as she is an alcoholic.

I find this book very relatable because it has lots of Aussie slang in it, for example they say “mozzie” instead of mosquito as well as “Noah’s Ark” stands for shark.

It’s told from each kid’s perspective which makes it really interesting to see how different people have such different points of view and thoughts.

I like this book because it says my friends are all different. I like that all my friends are all different and so that is why I like this book. I think that my friends are all different and that is what makes them who they are and that’s how they get their own personality.

SMILE

BOOK REVIEW by Josh Gr5

I think the graphic novel, SMILE is a really funny book.

It won The Will Esner Award in The National Comic Awards. It is a book from the 1980’s to the 1990’s.

Featured in the book is the San Francisco Earthquake, where a bridge collapsed. It also includes; family, friends, boys, dental drama and middle – high school graduation.

I recommend this book for my best mates to read, Ewan, Xavier and Imogen.
