Learning In Focus - Science

Mr Tim Lee

Now that we are back in class STEM teachers have been actively seeking to safely deliver practical hands-on learning activities.

We welcome Anne Golding to St John’s who is filling in as our Lab Technician for a few weeks to support our teachers with science activity preparation.

In Science we currently have students using microscopes, chemically testing water, analysing motion with ticker timers, modelling the solar system and simulating the effect of pathogens using yeast.  In Year 9 STEM PBL we have gone directly into programming Lego robots to attempt some prescribed space missions.  In technology, design and safe use of tools for productions is the focus in constructing a wooden dice, boxes, furniture, electronic kits and textiles projects.  Given the unavoidable emphasis in theory-based teaching during the remote learning period, both students and teachers are relieved to now re-engage via these practical applications.

In the coming weeks our Year 10 and 11 students will begin to consolidate the semester’s work and prepare for the examination period prior to entering their 2021 transition classes.  We look forward to all students finishing the year strongly with a solid foundation to facilitate a more normal school experience in 2021.

We also wish the year 12 VCE cohort all the best for exams as we work with them to support their final preparations.
