HaDSCO Offices where Year 11 student, Kate Colley undertakes a School Based Traineeship

Kate Colley- School Based Traineeship Program

School based traineeships are Certificate II and Certificate III programs approved by industry to give students a head start in their careers. John Wollaston provides students many opportunities to engage with various work industries through this program, receiving support from the VET and Careers Office staff. Year 11 student, Kate Colley is currently participating in the School Based Traineeship (SBT) Program, partnering with the Health and Disability Services Complaint Office (HaDSCO).

Kate is completing a Certificate II in Government Administration and attends various training days, while working in an office environment.

“The workplace has a great atmosphere and it’s a place where I can make connections with many people from managers to case officers. They are great to talk to and hear their advice about a future career in this industry.”

Through administration work experience, Kate has learned skills about supporting others, balancing time and record management.

Hospitality and VET Coordinator, Susan Leach supports students participating in the program and also updates students on traineeship and employment opportunities. Kate will continue her traineeship into Year 12 and graduate with her Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), Certificate II in Government Administration, Certificate III in Business and two years of work experience.

Kate was also recently announced as the 2021 Environment Prefect. Her goal is to create a long-lasting change and a school wide commitment to doing our part for the environment.

“Even if it is one small thing that everybody at John Wollaston can contribute towards, whether that be waste management, water or energy use, it can make a difference overall.”

As a hardworking, polite and caring student, Kate is making the most of opportunities offered to her at John Wollaston, giving her a strong foundation for a future career or studies. We wish Kate all the best with the continuation of her SBT, school studies and leadership roles in 2021.

Bricklaying Apprenticeships

The Construction Industry is currently experiencing very high levels of residential building activity and as such the need for essential trades such as Bricklayers has also risen significantly in WA.

Working with industry partners the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation (ABBTF) are seeking like minded young men and women to potentially engage in a Bricklaying Apprenticeship to fulfil current and future vacancies.

The ABBTF have developed an online Jobs Board via their website for those that can meet the Essential Criteria for immediate employment.

The ABBTF are also interested in anyone that could potentially engage in either a Bricklaying Pre Apprenticeship or Pre Vocational Course as these courses have been discounted between 50-100% for suitable candidates.
