Magis report

Whilst this may have been the last week of term, there was no slowing down for the Magis program! Our Magis students are constantly striving to ‘do more’ and this was aptly demonstrated last weekend, with students taking part in a number of competitions across various disciplines - from debating and creative thinking to netball and rowing. And throughout it all, maintaining a positive attitude and offering support for one another. Showing everyone what it truly means to be ‘men and women for others’.

Congratulations to our Years 9 and 10 Teams who competed at Curtin University on Saturday in the State Finals of Creative Edge. This competition challenges participants to develop both critical and creative thinking skills and encourage them to experiment with original ways to communicate their challenge solution to an audience. I am delighted to announce that both teams won their respective categories – Literature and Communication, and Society and Environment – as well as the overall Spirit Award. An outstanding result and well deserved!

Well done also to our senior debaters who competed in the Edith Cowan University British Parliamentary Debating Competition over the weekend. This competition provided our students with the opportunity to compete in a distinct style of debating, and gain experience in public speaking and critical thinking. Well done to Year 10 students Meg Derbyshire, Felix Frichot, Asha Paton and Thomas Syminton.

Congratulations to Year 9 student Poppy Hartfield, who took part in the State Finals of FameLab Academy on Tuesday at the Heath Ledger Theatre. FameLab Academy is a school’s initiative for Years 9 and 10 students to encourage their interest in STEM and develop their science communications skills. In 2022, over 530 students took part across Western Australia, with only nine students being selected for the State Final. Poppy chose to present on the topic of ‘Women in STEM – looking to the future’. As one of the judges remarked “I recognise how important this is and I’m pleased that you chose to talk about it”. Outstanding work Poppy – well done!

Round 3 of the Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition was held on Tuesday evening at the WA Supreme Court. Our team went up against Rossmoyne Senior High School - appearing for the accused in a criminal case. The accused had been charged with creating a false belief that human safety was endangered.

While Mock Trials is certainly a team effort, a special mention must be made of our first-time barristers, Yvie Rigg and Spencer Burchett, who were outstanding in their roles. There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to the trial, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules, enthusiastically attended lunchtime meetings.

Our Round 3 Team included:

  • Barrister 1: Yvie Rigg
  • Barrister 2: Spencer Burchett
  • Solicitor: Kady Wall
  • Witness 1: Laura Rutherford
  • Witness 2:  Sophie Gazia
  • Judges Associate:  Zoe Furness

Lastly, thank you to all students and staff for another outstanding Term. I look forward to celebrating the achievements of our Magis students at the Magis Awards Breakfast next term. Invitations will be sent out to all award participants in Week 2. Wishing everyone a safe and merry term break!
