Year 11 Politics & Law Excursion

Last Thursday, our second class of Year 11 Politics & Law students attended the law courts and Parliament. This excursion provides students with the opportunity to observe our legislature and judiciary at work – broadening and advancing their understanding of the court system and the processes and procedures undertaken by Parliament for effective governance.

In the morning, the students participated in an empty court activity in the Supreme Court – testing their knowledge of courtroom layout and the roles of court personnel. Students then attended a high-profile criminal trial in the District Court, before visiting the Magistrates Court in session. This afforded students an invaluable learning opportunity to compare how indictable and summary offences are dealt with.

In the afternoon, students attended the Parliament of Western Australia. As parliament was prorogued, students were afforded the opportunity to sit inside both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Students then met with Dr Sam Hutchinson, a Research Officer with the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee. Dr Hutchinson discussed with students the role that committees play assisting Parliament in its scrutiny and lawmaking functions. Was a rewarding experience.

Festeggiamo con una pizza!

Following last week’s images and article on the Year 9 Japanese students working enthusiastically on creating bento and sushi, please find attached a video of their masterpieces in Japanese.

Well done to the Year 9 Japanese students and to their teacher, Sensei Glass for creating this video.

The Years 11 and 12 Italian ATAR students have been working very hard towards their end of year oral and written exams. On Monday 19 September, it was an opportunity for the students to share a pizza e una chiacchierata at Monsterella Pizzeria in Wembley.

Students engaged in variety of ice-breaker games while enjoying their cioccolata calda and tiramisu. Students learnt the different meaning of Italian words that we see in many menus and cafés, especially affogato (meaning the ice-cream is drowning in the espresso coffee). Students completed all of this while answering questions in Italian and braving the cold. It was an enjoyable evening shared by all.

On Wednesday 21 September, the Year 10 and 11 Italian students along with Prof Cinini and Prof Polizzi headed to Palace Cinema in Raine Square to watch the Italian film, 'La Befana vien di notte 2: Le origini' (The Legend of the Christmas Witch 2 – The Origins.)

The students were engaged not only with the Italian language and glimpse of dialect but also with the images of the Italian cities and the cultural and religious elements. The film, a family adventure, expresses the power of imagination and fantasy, telling the story of the origins of the Befana. The films links to the Year 11 ATAR Italian course of ‘le tradizioni e le feste’ (traditions and festivals), and the Year 10 Italian curriculum explore Italian interests and pastimes which include music and films.

The group thoroughly enjoyed the film and recommends the wider to community to watch this film or to catch one of the marvellous Italian films at the St. Ali Italian Film Festival of 2022.

Clubs

The Dungeons and Dragons Clubs will recommence in Term 4 in the Library from 3:30pm until 5:00pm. Both Year 7 groups will continue on their  various side quests on the Lost Mines of Phandelver.

The group organised by Tom Beach and Alex Roberts will also recommence.

The STEM Drone Club has been blessed with two donations to help us buy new drones. Ms Tricia Ho and the Parents' Association have donated enough money for us to buy six of the latest Mavic Mini 3 Drones, that come with their own controllers and excellent movie making potential. The money also allowed us to buy more Tello drones with their own controllers as well, and new batteries.

Next term we shall be offering a small number of Primary students the opportunity to fly drones. The decision as to who and when we will fly, will be discussed with Ms De Pinto.

The Drone club has set up an account with the College’s Foundation that will allow other parents and people with an interest in allowing young people to be exposed to this technology, to donate money to allow the Drone Club to buy more drones and expand the numbers of students gaining experience in this STEM activity. The link to the donation program is here.

Any money donated to the Club is tax deductible.

The Secondary Chess Club has been bubbling along this term, but now it is time for all the practice to take effect. The Magis Chess Tournament will begin early next term and any student interested in applying to be part of the tournament need to contact Ms Daisy Farley. This is a knockout competition and will run until the winner is found. Included in this year's Magis tournament, will be the six grand finalists from the Primary Chess Club competition.
