Year 10 Social Justice Camp

Michael Worley, Senior School

Our Year 10 Social Justice camp, in conjunction with Beyond Limits, has provided opportunities for our young people to engage with organisations and people on the front-lines bringing hope and justice to locals in our community.

The students enjoyed the first day of camp blessed with beautiful sunny weather. They enjoyed team building activities (some getting quite muddy!), and developed relationships across the year level! Students were challenged with the concept of power and how they use that.

On Tuesday evening we enjoyed a devotion led by Ms March and students were encouraged in their identity in Christ to be agents for change in the world. We played Family Feud and the students were very enthusiastic, even beating the teachers in one of the rounds. We finished the evening with most of the students heading on a night hike to Belair National Park where we enjoyed seeing the starry night sky.

On Wednesday, the year-level was divided in two. Half of the students went to the City and were firstly based at Pilgrim Church. There, they heard from a person who has experienced homelessness, as well as giving the students exposure to the issue of homelessness. Students participated in a city-wide experience where they engaged with businesses and support agencies to discover what it is like for someone experiencing homelessness.

The other half of our student body visited The Spire Community at Norwood, an organisation that promotes social inclusion. Students worked in the Cafe, Op Shop and engaged with some of the workers and activities on offer.

A highlight for all students was visiting op shops in Blackwood or Norwood, where students were given some money to spend and purchase an outfit for our dress up night.  On Wednesday evening, students enjoyed a night of 10-pin bowling at Marion. It was a delight hearing the joyful and cheerful noises of our students as they enjoyed life together.

On Thursday, students chose one of seven different organisations to visit across Adelaide and surrounding regions, including: Gwen’s Pantry, Blackwood Hills Baptist Church, Treasure Boxes, Teen Challenge, The Salvation Army Unley, tree planting with Brush with Kindness at Woodside, Catherine House & Westcare Centre, and Puddle Jumpers.

The last day of camp was filled with team building activities as well as an opportunity for students to share their learnings from the camp. It was powerful hearing the ways in which students have been affected deeply this week by the people and places they have heard and visited.

We are proud of the students' engagement with the aspects of social justice on the camp. In addition, we are proud of the supportive community that is evident amongst the Year 10 students.
