SWAP news (Student Wellbeing & Performing Arts)

The children have started to explore the Respectful relationships topic called Problem Solving. The Junior students were read a story called “Dante and the feathery problem” about a bird that keeps growing bigger. The rainbow coloured bird begins to eat Dante’s clothes and wreck his room. He has kept it a secret from his parents.  The children were then asked to brainstorm lots of possible solutions to the problem identified in the story and identify which choice would be the best option. The children identified that sometimes things might start out being a small problem but if left alone can turn into a big problem. We also need to know when to ask for help. The children drew some solutions to the problem.

The Senior students learnt about the ‘Daisy model’ to help them solve problems and record their ideas for possible solutions. This model can be used to help us map out our options before we make a decision about what is the right thing to do. First we name the problem and write the name on the stem. Then we brainstorm options, a different one for each petal.

Then in the centre we put the option we have chosen. The students were given some different scenarios. They used the daisy model to come up with some possible solutions to the problem then acted out what they decided was the best option.

The Senior students also learnt about events that may trigger our emotions. Sometimes things happen to make us feel worried, upset, or frustrated! These things are called “triggers”. These put us in the Yellow or Red Zone. The children worked in groups to identify what some of these triggers might be. These events are called triggers and we all have them. We need to be aware of them so we can take CAUTION! When we see a yellow Caution traffic sign, it is a warning that there is danger up ahead on the road and we need to be very careful. e.g. Caution slippery when wet, road construction ahead. The children worked in groups to identify what the triggers might be then responded to the following questions.

Why is it important to recognise your own triggers?

How will this help you?

How is it helpful to know each other’s triggers?

What will you do differently if you know what triggers your peers?

How could this influence the class as a whole?

What will you do the next time you detect one of your triggers?

Junior Music :  Tone Colour/Timbre

While exploring the Junior Music unit on ‘Musical Elements’, children grasped the concepts of 'Tone Colour/Timbre'. They investigated how Tone Colour is the unique sound quality of any instrument that distinguishes it from another instrument.

The students also discovered how one instrument can create different tone colours. For example, you can tap or scrape a Guiro to create two very different sounds but it is still the one instrument.

Students were able to create a unique timbre through Art. The students created a Maraca using an empty water bottle, one cup of rice and an empty toilet roll. Students used coloured tape and sequins to decorate the bottles. These pieces will be presented at the 2022 Arts Show next Thursday.

Senior Music :  Soundscapes

In Term 4, the Senior students have been exploring Soundscapes. Soundscapes are when we use sound and music to create the atmosphere of a story or setting. These sounds can be background noises, sound effects, or musical instruments that sound like what is happening (e.g. using a maraca to sound like rain). The students composed/documented a soundscape on an environment of their choice. Students performed these soundscapes to their peers and needed to guess what the environment was. Students also provided feedback to one another using a criteria sheet and written feedback.
