MHS Environmental Summit 2019

On Friday 24 May, 20 students representing Nossal High School travelled to Melbourne High School to be a part of their annual Environmental Summit. We all arrived by 9.00am and after getting our names checked off, we filed into the Memorial Hall in the main ‘castle building’ of the school. We were put into 9 different groups, each with students from the four selective schools. Three guest speakers were invited to the stage to speak about climate change and the sciences behind it. The long speeches were informative and helped us learn more about climate change and different ways to approach it. After this we had a 25-minute panel-style discussion, where a student from each school asked a ‘big question’ related to the environment.

When recess finished, we went to our first workshop of the day. The one I went to was run by the guest Maurizio Tuscano and was an interactive session about ‘ethics and climate change’. We were put into groups and tasked with finding a way on distributing a piece of cake in the most ethical way, which was definitely a fun an interactive session. We then went on the second workshop, which was run by the guest Keith Allilomou. He talked about incremental changes we can make in order to make an effect in the long term, such as cutting back on red meat or turning the lights off after leaving a room. To conclude the day, we had a sausage sizzle for lunch and then a third workshop, run by the AYCC (Australian Youth Climate Coalition). They presented with information on climate action, and what we can do to tackle the issue. We then gathered into the Memorial Hall where we were dismissed. The whole day was a fun and exciting experience, where we were able to meet other students who shared similar passions as us, and I hope to be using the valuable information I learnt today and implementing into my own life.
