Year 4
'The GRANNY'
Probably the most nerve racking game of basketball in our lives. Thoughts rushing through our minds of ‘can we make it a repeat of last semester?’ Starting 5 were Tom, Reuben, Ned, Donovan and Nicholas. Before we knew it, the game had started. We were the underdog because we had only played one term in this league and never played this team before. The team we were playing were top of the ladder but going into this match we were quietly confident.
Heading into the last quarter, the nerves started kicking in more than ever. Everyone but Ned that was in the starting 5 was off. Elwood started to come back strong and it forced Jane, our coach, to call a timeout. Then luckily, we pushed away. In the end it was a good win and we won The Granny. Also it being our last game for the Bayside Sharks, we were all over the moon that we had won.
Well done to: Callan and Ethan also from St James and Thomas H and Flynn J from Gardenvale Primary school.
Year 1
Highlights
We have had a very busy year filled with lots of learning and highlights. Let’s start with the First Semester. We went to see David Hockney Exhibition at the National Gallery…....now that was fun.
We were so inspired that we created our own artwork and wrote poetry. We also learnt lots about Spiders and were able to investigate our own questions about them. We also went on a ‘Spider Hunt’ around the schoolyard. Did you know that we have lots of spiders at school??!!
In Year 1 we love to read, especially Roald Dahl books. We read The Twits, Magic Finger, Fantastic Mr Fox and Pelly and Me. We also made puppets based on the characters in the story. Some of us even played ‘Mr Fox’ games outside at playtime. Writing has also been fun in Year 1. We have written our own stories and shared them with the class, some children even made a stopmotion movie. Some of them have been very long!!!!
Semester Two we went off to Science Works as our focus was Space. We learnt lots when we were there. We really loved creating our own books and turning our classroom into a rocket ship. In Mathematics we loved to work with big numbers and were pretty good at it! Consonant Clusters, Japanese Day, Assembly, The Musical, counting teeth, Speaking and Listening, apple peeler, ‘Star of the Week’ and Miss Whiffen’s shop were also some many things we loved to do in Year 1.
We had a great Year and we look forward to being in Year Two

Such a fun match, the 2017 Year 6 students put up a good fight, but the teachers were undefeated yet again. The Johnson Hyslop combo worked a treat. Everyone played well as we worked through 6 quarters of Netball, in the blazing sun. Thanks to Miss Coelli for scoring. Teachers rule in 2017!
A special Thanks to Jade E , Ava P and Miss Nelson. .
P.s. Mrs Ferrari would like to add that having participated in 11 Annual Students v Staff Netball Matches (as both umpire and player), the staff have yet to lose a match. Just saying.........

Year 4
WONDER
Last Wednesday, Year 4 went to Dendy Cinemas to see Wonder. It was AWESOME! It was an amazing opportunity to go as a class and celebrate the end of the year. We loved Wonder because it made us feel sad, happy, angry and annoyed all at the same time. It explored themes of bullying, difference, jealousy and friendship. We had a few favourite sayings in Wonder and two of them were: 1. Don’t try to blend in when you were born to stand out and 2. When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind. We had a great time reading the book in class.
Year 4
Highlights
In Year 4 have had an extraordinary 2017 filled with lots of excitement! We have had such an action packed year, its hard to know where to start. A highlight for us was Bike Ed camp to Maldon. It was such a great opportunity to develop new friendships. Another highlight has been preparing for the musical where we have grown in confidence. Seeing Wonder at the cinema was an awesome way to end the year with a heartwarming story. Can't wait to see what Year 5 in 2018 holds.
Highlights from 5N 2017
Will
This year in 5N I really enjoyed everything, but especially doing the Lion King production, I love going to rehearsals with my friends, as well as making new friends from Year 6 because of the Lion King. Another amazing thing about this year was inter school sports, for my sport I chose footy and loved playing with my friends while playing a fantastic sport.
Saskia
This year in year 5N I really enjoyed everything and I loved making new friends and having a chance to participate in lots of experiences that I have never done before. One of my favourite things about year 5 was camp. Going to Merricks Lodge. Working with different people, doing lots of different activities and experiencing new things. The activities we did were surfing, a 20m tree climb, kayaking, orienteering and snorkeling, which was my favourite! At camp we were taught a lot of things, teamwork & cooperation.
Chilli
This year in 5N I have really enjoyed everything and feel I have had a big chance to grow. One of the things that I enjoyed this year was our space unit. We spent a few weeks learning about space and then had an incursion. We learnt about stars, asteroids, planets, satellites and more. Another thing that I enjoyed was having a buddy to look after. My buddies Issy and Keely taught me a few things like how to play Mums and Dads, how to play tiggy and how two look after 2 crazy Year Ones.
Issy
This year in Year 5 I especially enjoyed our day camp to Sovereign Hill. On our excursion we had the the opportunity to gold pan, explore Sovereign Hill, go in an old gold mine and play a gold rush simulator game. My favourite part of Sovereign Hill was definitely buying lots of lollies from the old lolly shop. In preparation for this excursion we had been researching and learning about the Australian Gold Rush in class. We wrote diary entries from the perspective of someone living during and at the Australian Gold Rush. Because of this of this excursion and learning topic I have gained much more knowledge about Australian history and have had an extremely entertaining and educational experience.
Miss Nelson
This year I absolutely loved the Lion King. Seeing all my students try their hardest has warmed my heart and made me extremely proud! What an amazing experience for both students and staff.
Highlights in 5B
In 5B I have enjoyed Performing Arts and the Lion King, it has been quite a great experience. Another highlight of year 5B has been the teacher and my classmates, they are all so supportive and I love being around them because of that. I’ve also enjoyed learning about leadership, I enjoyed the interviews, Superspeak and just leadership in general. Last but not least, my personal favourite, camp, I loved all the activities and how we went in groups and got to sleep in cabins instead of a tent! - Tilly A
In Year 5B the one of the main elements of school I enjoyed was the Tournament of Minds because it opened my understanding to different types of problem solving and working with people I wouldn’t normally work with. Another highlight in year five was getting the chance to do BIDMAS relays because we got to incorporate sport into our math. For me a pinnacle in the school year was reading Harry Potter. - Ginger C
I have enjoyed everyday, every hour and every second of being in 5B. I made a lot friends and met new people that were in other grades. One thing that i'm really proud of is finishing my letter application for leadership, it was quite stressful but at the end it was really worth it. On the topic of leadership I'm very happy I am a Social Justice Captain next year. Oh and don't get me started on camp!!! We did so many fun activities like, canoeing, tree climbing , treasure hunts and much more. Life in 5B has been amazing. - Charlie B
This year in 2017 I loved camp. I loved camp because I met new friends there. I loved the snorkeling and seeing a pufferfish, which I was a bit scared of! We also got to jump off a pier. Stella was scared so I helped her jump off it. When we were jumping off it we did some model poses and it was funny as! - Lucy A
My biggest highlight during year 5 has been TOM (Tournament Of Minds). I enjoyed this the most because it was challenging and fun at the same time. During this task we faced lots of challenges like what countries to use, how to make the costumes and how to make the final Kandian dance. What I enjoyed about it was seeing the final product and presenting it in front of judges at Deakin University. - Dana Z
This year there has been many moments and memories to cherish and enjoy. Going on camp has to be one of my favourite things we have done this year. I loved all the activities we did such as snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, tree climbing and so much more! In my activity group I made so many new friends and learnt so much about myself I didn’t already know. - Chloe L
