IB MYP Year 8 Individuals and Society: Field Trip to Mt Lofty

On Monday of Week 10, 8 Blue and 8 Red went on an excursion to Mount Lofty. We have been working on an assignment about the physical and human geography of Mount Lofty, including changes which have occurred to Mount Lofty naturally and by humans.

We began our excursion with a very long bus drive with lots of traffic. Once we had finally arrived at Mount Lofty, we stopped to have our lunch. After that, we had a chance to walk around the top of the mountain and explore the physical and human features.

Next, we had a short hike to look at some of the native plants and human impacts. The teachers told us about the geology and vegetation that we saw. For example, we learnt about the Flinders Tower, which was the highest peak of the mountain and used to be called a ‘can’. We also learnt about how some plants have adapted to bush fires that occur in the Mt Lofty area. Plants such as Eucalypts have a high amount of oil in their leaves which causes them to burn. These plants are able to regenerate and their seeds germinate because of bushfires.

We learnt many other things too. We all had a really good time and now have lots of information for our assignment.
