Senior School Swimming Carnival

The weather gods were smiling on the 2020 Senior Swimming Carnival with a very comfortable 25 degree day and scattered cloud.

The boys were outstanding with participation at an all-time high and excellent competition at all levels.

House spirit was foremost and the engagement shown by the boys was superb.

In the final tally Purton took out the House Championship but in truth School Spirit was the real winner!

Match Reports:

ISA Round 7 - 1st XI v St Stanislaus' College, Bathurst

The 1st XI travelled away to Bathurst on a stiflingly hot day. Losing the toss and blowing the opposition were 2/4 with wickets from Duncan Dingley and Liam Chang respectively. An aggressive partnership from the next two Bathurst batsmen resulted in centuries for each of them as the SPX bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs. A good fight back in the last part of the innings thanks to James Power’s 10 over spell and late wickets to Joe Colgan somewhat put the brakes on the St Stanislaus innings. Tyson McCallum kept very well in the extremely trying conditions. An imposing chase faced the SPX team who made a solid start as Adam Greenwood struck the ball well. A 45-run partnership between Stuart Dingley and Joe Colgan was followed by some aggressive stroke making from Charlie Sharp as the total reached 3-103. A hat trick from the host’s fast bowler stopped the run chase in its tracks. Laurence Sheehan hit out well towards the end, but the 1st XI suffered a comprehensive defeat. The team go to Oakhill next round in a crucial match in terms of the whole competition in a 3rd versus 4th place clash determined to bounce back.

St Stanislaus 7 for 287 (J. Colgan 2-13, L. Chang 1-33, J. Power 1-37, L. Sheehan 1-20, D. Dingley 1-57, J. Hooper 1-45) defeated St Pius X College 151 (J. Colgan 44, L. Sheehan 36 not out, S. Dingley 22)

Representative Honours

Congratulations to Joe Colgan (Year 11) who has been selected and is currently playing in the NSW U16 State Challenge for Metro Thunder. The carnival is an important part of the Cricket NSW Pathway for each young player as they pursue selection in future underage teams. This State Challenge will also be used to help select the Under 17 Academy squads for both Metro and Country.

Congratulations also go to Liam Chang (Year 11) was named in the combined 2020 EREA Australasian Team after the 40th Christian Brother Cricket Week for his 7 wickets and 70 runs during the first four matches.

Christian Brothers Cricket Week - 5 to 11 January 2020

The tour party of 16 players and 4 staff arrived in a steamy Brisbane to stay the week at Nudgee College, hosts of the 40th carnival.  We were joined during the week by Mr Couani and Mr Mulheron whose support and presence were greatly appreciated.

The first day of play in the top division of 8 teams (the Shield) was at Nudgee against their 1st XI.  The opposition was bowled out in the final over for 261 with Adam Greenwood snaring three wickets and good displays of bowling from Liam Kinna and Duncan Dingley.  Early wickets put the SPX team under pressure.  Josh Overton and Charlie Sharp showed great resistance with the bat ensuring that it took Nudgee 38 overs to bowl the tourists out.

St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace was another tough opponent on Day 2.  The loss of the first three wickets for just 5 runs was followed by a fighting 58 stand between Sharp and Stuart Dingley.  The final Pius total of 8 for 170 showed an excellent recovery.  Despite very good spells from bowlers Liam Chang, Liam Kinna and Rory O’Connell the team succumbed to another loss.

A 20/20 fixture on Day 3 against St Laurence’s brought out the best of the new opening line up of Joe Colgan and Jackson Carrall, whose 76 run partnership, made chasing 101 runs from the opponents an easy task and gave an 8 wicket victory to the Pius team.

After a visit to Bribie Island and the Sunshine Coast, the touring group enjoyed a BBL match under lights at the Gabba.

Another exciting game the next day as Pius faced St Peter’s Auckland, who have been friendly rivals for many years.  Pius looked like a win was achievable until a late attack from their left-handed all rounder saw them achieve the win.

St Virgil’s from Hobart was the final draw.  With the opponent’s 140, Pius equalled the score with four wickets in hand.

Special thanks to Mr Rodgers, Mr Reay, Mr Kovacic and Mr Brannan for taking the boys.  Thanks also to the parents who were able to join us.  All the players are to be commended on their behaviour, cooperation and efforts in trying conditions.
