Year 7 Swimming Carnival

Year 7 Swimming Carnival

It was a hot one for our inaugural school swimming carnival. At the start of the day the students were given a mission stay cool and set the bar that future years will aim for, and they sure set that bar high! The energy, house spirit and performances in the pool were phenomenal. A huge congratulations to Cooper on winning the House Swimming cup and to Charlie Butteriss, Abigail Francis and Sienna Sarah for setting our first school records. We are excited to see this carnival grow and many more records to be forged and bested.

Senior Volleyball

It was the second sport outing for the senior’s with 3 teams representing Northcote High school at the division volleyball tournament. Firstly a huge thankyou to Amelia Mensigh and Alicia Chant (last years “coaches of the year” recipients) who came down just to watch and ended up coaching the entire day. The senior girls had a more compact start to the day playing 4 of the first 5 rounds wining 2 and losing 2 and unfortunately missing out on finals. The senior boys won all their games and progressed to the final match of the day. The quality of the final was exceptional and the NHS team preforming well in front of a one-sided crowd. Losing from 1 set up is never easy, especially with some head scratching decisions, however I was extremely proud of how the team handled the loss and did so with their heads held high.

Regional Senior Cricket

The senior boys won all three games they played in the regional competition, with a nail-bitter finish against SEDA inner north. Northcote won with the final ball flying over the boundary for 6. Thomas Sweetman hit a resounding 15 sixes for the day and retired on 88 not out in his first game. It was a great day out with the boys through to the next stage of the finals.

With three teams competing in the Senior girls competition, we won one of our two games. In our first game against Hume we lost by 1 run. We were a little unlucky giving most students a bowl and having too many extras like wides. In the second game Melbourne Girls beat Hume by 50 runs. Next we played Melbourne Girls - could we beat them? Well we did. We kept rotating everyone to bowl but we had less extras and great online results. We limited them to 59 runs from 60 balls. Our captain Minnie O’Sullivan batted through the innings making 35 runs as passed their score with an over to spare. Every player in the team deserves mention for their great bowling, batting, fielding and attitude. They could have given up after losing their first game. Instead they stood up and upset the tournament winner Melbourne Girls who won on percentage.

Intermediate Cricket

The intermediate cricket team battled oppressive heat and tough opposition at the cricket divisional tournament in Resevoir on Friday. In a balanced team effort, Northcote was able to win all three games in the fast paced Ten10 format. Finbar Kennedy and Jay Ryan were able to demonstrate class with the bat while Joel Dichiera and Harry Gruenert proved to be a dangerous new ball combination as the team looks forward to the regionals in the coming weeks.

Baseball/Softball

Many of the Year 7s had never played baseball before so it was great to see the team working together to get organised in their positions and batting order as well as getting a refresher on the rules of the game. The students played well, and cheered each other along for a great result of 9 to 7 beating Preston by 2 runs to go through to the next stage. Well done to all the boys.

The intermediate girls softball team faced just one opponent in the Divisional round of softball, Lalor. With a team full of year 10s and a number having progressed through to State last year, Northcote had a dominant game. Final score 21-4. Bring on Regional round!

The Year 8 boys team won a hard-fought game against Preston. Both teams could only manage 3 runs in the first 3 innings. The 4th innings saw NHS score 6 home runs but even with some great pitching from Harry Preston again drew even. It wasn't until the 5th innings and 2 hrs later that the boys got up 6-5 to take the win.

Intermediate Tennis

Every year we have an iconic Tennis day, except that usually we lose. Today was different, today was something special. Today the team was locked in: Joel, Matthew, Dylan, Nate, Leo, Ella, Issy, Grace and me, Asher Oakley. We rose to the challenge and played good clean tennis, supported by our wonderful teachers Pauline and Mr Martin.

Year 8 Cricket

The team had a great day beating Thornbury HS by 12 runs, Preston HS by 50 runs and Debney Park by 7 runs. Every player made contributions in batting, bowling and fielding. Special mentions to James Gordon who retired after making over 30 runs in the first 2 games. Asher Bartley who contributed with bat and ball. He also captained the team giving everyone a bowl and a bat over the 3 games. Harry Marr - batting and bowling and Antony Joseph keeping and batting dominated the game. They now progress to the Regional finals next week.

The girls team played well and improved from shaky beginnings. Their attitude and willingness to learn was impressive. A great day out and everyone enjoyed themselves and found a new sporting interest.
