Class Updates and Reminders

Messages from our Learning Levels...

Prep

Dates to Remember:

  •  Thursday 18th May: Collingwood Children's Farm. Please see Compass

Reminders:

Uniform

At SMPS, students are required to wear black polishable school shoes. We have noticed a trend in Prep where students are wearing incorrect shoes.  Please see below some examples of appropriate school uniform shoes, and where these can be purchased from.

School Events

We have now the majority of our Prep events that will be occurring throughout the year on Compass. It would be greatly appreciated if you could check that you have given consent for the excursions.

Year 1

Dates to Remember:

  •  Tuesday 23rd May: Dream City In-Visit

Reminders:

Homework:

Our students began the year with an exemplary dedication to their homework, and we are eager to see this continue throughout the new term. We strongly encourage you to maintain your support in ensuring that your child completes one Mathseeds lesson per week. Please remember that Sunday marks the start of a new week.

Science:

We are actively looking for small boxes (shoebox size) to support our Term 2 Science Unit: Sanctuaries for Survival. Your child will use this box to build a habitat. We kindly request that you start sending the boxes to school in advance for project preparation. Our goal is to ensure that every student has a box by the conclusion of Week 4.

iPads:

Please ensure your child brings a fully charged iPad to school daily as it is a vital tool for accessing curriculum materials, participating in class activities, and maximizing educational opportunities through interactive learning experiences. A charged iPad allows them to actively engage, access resources, and enhance their overall learning experience.

Year 2

Dates to Remember:

  • Monday 8th May: Minibeasts In-Visit

Reminders:

Homework:

Students have begun the term with a strong homework routine. Last week we had 81% of the cohort complete their Mathseeds. What an amazing effort, as this was a short week. Please continue to support your child to complete their 1 lesson of Mathseeds each week. Note: Sunday begins a new week.

sw

Completing 4 nights reading is important for your child to develop their fluency and comprehension skills. Your child can write the book title, pages and minutes, ready for you to sign in their diary. Please support your child to bring their diary to school every day.

Learning Apps:

When using iPads at home, it is really important that your child only accesses Mathseeds and myON for their homework routine. Reading Eggspress and Maths Invaders should only be accessed at school. Thank you for your support with this.

Consent:

In Term 3, our Year 2 students are going on an excursion called TwistedEd Science which 70% of the cohort have already given consent for. If you have not already, the event is on Compass for you to view. It would be greatly appreciated if consent could be given for 100% of the cohort in Term 2, ready for the upcoming excursion. Thank you for your support with this.

Humanities:

We are continuing to seek small boxes for our Term 2 Humanities Unit: Roaming in a Rainforest. (Shoe box size is fine.) This small box will be used by your child to create a mini rainforest. It would be greatly appreciated if boxes could begin coming to school in preparation for this project. We are hoping to have all students with a box by the end of Week 4.

Year 3

Dates to Remember:

  • Wednesday 24th May: Reptile Encounters Invisit
  • Friday 2nd June: Year 3 Assembly performance
  • Tuesday 13th June - Monday 19th June: Swimming Lessons

Reminders:

Accelerated Reader

Students in Year 3 have now been given an Accelerated Reader Target. This is a number of points that your child is aiming to achieve this term by taking comprehension quizzes on the books they read.

You can support your child with their goal at home by:

  • Encouraging them to read for at least 20 minutes at home each night
  • Asking your child what their points target is and what they are doing to achieve it
  • Ensuring your child is at school on time as students take quizzes in class between 8:45am – 9:00am each morning
  • Supporting them to find books that are within their Accelerated Reader range
  • Asking them questions about what they read

Homework Diary Signing

Students in Year 3 are expected to complete homework each night. This includes reading for 20-30 minutes per night and completing 200-1000 activity points on Mathletics per week.  Please support your child by encouraging them to complete their homework each night, record this in their diaries, and have their diary signed. Diaries are to come to school every day so that their teacher can check the progress of their homework entries.

Year 4

Dates to Remember:

  •  Wednesday 10th May: Animals on the Move invisit

Reminders:

Homework

Each week, Year 4 students are expected to complete between 200-1000 points on Mathletics as well as reading for half an hour a night and recording this in their school diary. So far this year, our best weekly result for Mathletics completion across the year level has been 98%. Let's see if we can get to 100% this term!

Year 5

Dates to Remember:

  • Thursday 25th May: Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Reminders:

Uniform

We have noticed an increase in the mixing of both the summer and winter uniforms amongst the Year 5 students. Please ensure that you are sending your child to school in either the full summer uniform or the full winter uniform. We thank you in advance for your assistance with this.

Year 6

Reminders:

This term, the Year 6 students have set higher Accelerated Reader (AR) goals for themselves, aiming to challenge themselves and make even greater progress in their reading abilities. Adults, you can play a crucial role by continuing to ask questions about what your child is reading, encouraging them to read aloud, and fostering agency when it comes to reading over weekends and evenings.

By asking your children about the books they are reading, you can gain insight into your child's comprehension and offer support where needed. Additionally, reading aloud can help children build confidence and fluency in their reading skills. We will be doing the same at school.

With your support, the Year 6 students can make significant strides towards achieving their AR goals and developing a lifelong love of reading.

Any questions about your child's current goal and progress, do not hesitate to ask.
