School Sports Victoria

This past week our secondary boys and girls volleyball teams participated in the Schools Sports Victoria Sunraysia Volleyball Competition.  Keep reading to hear from our students about how they went.

Girls’ first match report:

On Thursday the 9th of March, these six girls went to an Inter School volleyball tournament at the Mildura Sporting Precinct: Tilesa Kolo, Kasanita Faoa, Chenoa Hunter, Anabelle Hawcroft, Mia Joseph, and Sophie Knell. The match that I, Bella Schultink, took notes on was the first match that MCC played in.

The match started and I immediately saw that Chenoa Hunter was an extraordinary volleyball player. She spiked the ball over the net so skillfully that the opposing team had no chance of saving it. Another awesome player was Kasanita Faoa, she served like no other player had.

I also saw some outstanding sportsmanship from Anabelle Hawcroft, when she missed a shot or carried the ball, instead of getting angry and throwing the ball to the other team, she calmly rolled it under the net and laughed at her own mistake.

Sadly we lost that match and the scores were 42 - 28.

The girls team played three other matches, the highlight of which was a close match against Coomealla, which they won! Special mentions to Sophie Knell and Mia Joseph, as this was their first ever volleyball tournament. They also equipped themselves well as the duty team, with Tilesa being a fair and decisive main referee.

Boys

The boys played three matches. Led by Toby Deroon, the team comprised of William Toetuu, Gordon Valente, Asher Kelleher, Josiah Deroon, Christian Faoa, David Nziama-Kaba, Levi Deroon and Mack Forbes-Wilson. After a nervous first encounter against Chaffey SC, they committed to building each other up—every player, every play—no one was to be left behind. This drove a dramatic improvement in not only attitude, but match play as well. Although they lost to Trinity and Merbein, the new approach led to an enjoyable day where many boys faced their nerves, gave their best, and made many memorable plays.

Quotes compiled by Andrew Foley and Joshua Chiera:

"Very good atmosphere, very good spirit and encouragement"—Asher Kelleher

“We are alright; we just need to work on communication and teamwork”—Christian Faoa

“We were down in the first game and lost hope and didn’t play well, but the second game definitely was better”—Josiah Deroon
