Term 1 Week 10 - Friday 7th April 2023

Wow! Our first term has flown by so quickly! We are so proud and impressed by the growth in confidence and courage of our fantastic foundation students!

The students are creating beautiful and caring friendships with one another! They are learning how to share, look out for one another and be patient with each other.

We are all so excited for our swimming lessons that are taking place in the first eight days of term 2!

What we are learning:

Phonics (Little Learners Love Literacy)

We start each day with our Little Learners Love Literacy program, and the students are thriving with this routine! So far, we have learnt the letters m, s, f and a, p, t, c & i and had a week revising  heart words - My, my, I, the and The.  We continue to discuss and explore when we use capital letters and how to blend sounds together to spell out a word. Each week we are introduced to a new character, and read a new page of the story ‘Milo’s monkey surprise’. This week's character is Izzy the insect. Every character has their own song which we love listening to!

Writing:

In our writing lessons we are continuing to work on our pencil grip. We are also continuing practising our letter tracing and writing. Specifically, the letters that we learnt in our Phonics program. We are practising the correct letter formation of each letter. For ‘t’ we have been remembering to go ‘down the tower, and across the tower’. and for the letter ‘c’, we have been ensuring that the ‘c’ is about to munch on our writing hand if we are right handed, or munching away from our writing hands if we are left handed.

Reading

We continue to have a weekly mentor text in reading. We are now focussing on rhyming books. We have read ’The Terrible Plop’. Each day, we read the text, and explore different reading skills. We have been adding various words from the mentor text  to our word wall each week and students have been using these words to create their own sentences. This week's new words are ’terrible’, frown’, and ‘brave’. We have also been learning about syllables and clapping out syllables in words from our word wall. To find the number of syllables in a word, we are learning to place our hands underneath our chins, each time our chin drops, it is a syllable. As always we use prediction to have a guess about what the story will be about and ask questions about the text before, during and after it to support their comprehension. We end the week by asking ourselves if we liked the book and why. When reading at home, this is a great way to end a reading session, helping us to improve our reading  comprehension.

Mathematics:

In maths, we are learning how to subitise and use tens frames to support our counting skills. We are also learning how to form each number between 0-20. practising your counting up to 20 at home will be a great support for your child. You can even use objects to aid them in their understanding of each number as they count. At school we use things like playdough balls and counters. At home, you can use anything from macaroni pasta, to crayons, or even teddy bears!

Inquiry:

Thankyou so much for sending through your beautiful family photos. It has been so sweet, watching the students proudly describe and explain their family members, and their favourite thing to do with their family. We have also been celebrating the fact that we are  part of a gorgeous school community. We created and decorated little people cutouts of ourselves, to show and celebrate our uniqueness.

Leader In Me:

We have continuously been using 7 Habit language when we are in class and out in the yard. In prep, we have been focusing on ‘synergise’, and how we can work together to create the best outcome.
