Vietnam Veterans’ Service (Battle Of Long Tan)

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the Vietnam Veterans’ Service (Battle of Long Tan) at the Lonsdale Street memorial.  It was a moving service where we reflected on the bravery of the men and women who represented their country.  Almost 60,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War over a ten year period and it was a time to say thank you for their sacrifices. Thinking about those who returned home and, the impact of the war on the rest of their lives and that of their families, whilst remembering those who lost their lives was an important way to honour these special people.

Daffodil Day

A special mention to Learmonth House who raised $205.30 for Cancer research with last week’s Daffodil Day. Charities rely heavily on your generosity and I know they really appreciate the support.  A little bit goes a long way.

Year Five Class Assembly

The students of Year Five showed us that they were born to entertain with performances based on their interpretation of David Walliams’ ‘Worst’ series of books.  We could see how much joy they got from sharing the stories in class with how invested they were in the characters, far removed from their usual behaviour. I’m sure we will see many of these students on stage in College shows in the future. Well done to Miss See and the Year Five students for a wonderful performance.

Year One Class Assembly

Next week on Wednesday 31st August we look forward to Year One’s performance at Assembly.  Please join us at the Senior School at 12.20 pm.

Wellness Week

We started the week relaxed in our pyjamas and taking part in mindfulness activities. We visited Senior School to have lunch all together. To see students from the Prep class playing basketball with our senior students was lovely. Students from across campuses enjoying each other’s company despite the rain shows our positive school culture. Dance moves were on display at the disco, whilst the craft session saw creativity galore as students made calm creatures, such as jellyfish and butterflies, as well as dreamcatchers. We finished the week in our finery by supporting local fundraiser ‘Dress to Impress’.   A great way to be involved in our community.

Book Week

Book Week was celebrated this week with the theme ‘dreaming with eyes open’. The theme was about dreaming and country, particularly our country’s indigenous heritage and stories of the Dreamtime, but also dreams of the future.

The very act of reading can be described as dreaming with your eyes open. Imagine reading a book with your eyes closed? Through reading, you are transported to a magical place which makes the focus on books an endless list of possibilities.

We took part in a livestream interactive show called Story Quest that saw us searching for Happily Ever After in Marley and Henry’s story. The actors used parts from some of the CBCA shortlisted books as the clues for the adventure, adding in song and dance to involve the students. The message from the show was different is wonderful.

Mrs Dempsey and Miss Welst kindly organised voting for our favourite books in the CBCA Book Awards and students enjoyed the reveal of the winners to see if their choices were the same.

Guest readers have been popping up in classrooms, with staff from across the school reading to the children. There was even a storytelling performance.

Our Prep to Year Three classes visited Greater Hamilton Library for their Book Week festivities, sharing stories and craft with the librarians.

Book Character Dress Up Day & Parade

What is your favourite book? Chances are you might have seen the main character step out of that story to spend the day at Myrniong this week as we celebrated Book Week with our annual book character dress up day. Characters from a wide range of stories, both classics and new appeared. Like past years, Harry Potter was in the spotlight. We know how much children love to read that series. I am always amazed at the thought and creativity that goes into all of the costumes. Some costumes leave both students and teachers unrecognisable.

Hats On

Next Thursday marks our Hats On day at the Junior School as we say goodbye to Winter and welcome Spring and hopefully the return of some warmer weather. As we are a Sunsmart School we are required to wear hats when we are outdoors. Now is a good time to find your school hat, ready for next week.  No hat no play. No one likes spending their playtime on the verandah without a hat.
