Students at work!

Science

Students in Year 8 have been learning about resources and the different mining processes used. Students in 8A and 8Q had a go at extracting copper from an ‘ore’ in class.

They did a great job and achieved some good results by applying their scientific investigation skills.

Outdoor Education

Monday, Thursday, and Friday last week saw some of our Outdoor Ed classes head out for a relaxing paddle in the Eagle Point and Paynesville areas. The Year 9 students had two large groups head down the Mitchell River Silt Jetties, admiring the 8 km formation, the second longest of its type in the world! Great fun was had by all, and minimal students ended up in the chilly water!

Year 9 Outdoor Ed has also been having a great time learning about first aid and how to deal with life-threatening situations. They’ve created some high stakes scenarios and produced spectacular special effects make-up to match.

Short Film Studies

Year 8 English students have been studying narratives in written and film text. Students have viewed a range of short films and analysed how films teach us about human nature, and our world. They have learnt about how directors and cinematographers create meaning and manipulate our emotions via camera angles, music, scenery, and narrative structure.

Students from 8 J interviewed cinematographer and director Mark Lamble. Mark spoke to the students about his career in the film industry, included working extensively with Sir David Attenborough. The students were also interested to hear how Mark went from being a farm kid attending Swifts Creek High School to winning an Emmy Award, and how a rural upbringing helped with the 'long hours and often boring and grubby work'. Mark also gave the students tips on how to manipulate an audience’s emotions and get a great shot when making their own short films.

R U OK? DAY

Thursday 8th September, was R U OK Day, our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘Are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.

To celebrate the occasion, our Year 9 Alpine School for Student Leadership team and Wellbeing ran some activities on the day during lunchtime which included a whole school out of uniform day for a gold coin donation to raise funds for the R U OK organisation, and a staff verses students basketball game won convincingly by staff! Other activities included novelty games run by the VCAL students, lawn games coordinated by the Wellbeing team, music, canvas making with Alara Hood’s team at Yoowinna Wurnalong Aboriginal Healing Service (an organisation that supports the wellbeing of indigenous boys and girls and the promotion of culture), as well as visitors from the Healthy Equal Youth (H.E.Y) Team - part of Gippsland Lakes Complete Health.

The College are really proud of the efforts put in by the Alpine Students for helping to run a very successful R U OK Day celebration raising $558.

Over the last term we have identified these TOP 20 students through PAT Math and PAT Reading results, along with classroom results and attendance.

We applaud these students as a high level of results are required to achieve this status, across all of the identified areas.

It is always a very pleasing task for our Hub staff and Assistant Principals to pass on this kind of information to students and parents. Seeing the quiet celebrations and facial expressions is so rewarding. Gauging by the responses of our Top 20 students they are extremely proud of their efforts and excited to be recognised for their results.

These students have been given a series of questions to think about and will meet regularly with Hub staff to establish and reset their learning goals. As we strive for excellence it is important that we recognise the efforts of all students, but it is particularly important that we recognise, celebrate and monitor the efforts and results of our TOP 20 students – not only now, but as they progress through their middle and senior years of schooling.

Year 9 students, you are next!  So, stay tuned - our Year 9 Top 20 will be announced very soon. 😊
