Celebrating Year 7 Science

This term in Science our Year 7 students have been exploring various scientific concepts. During the topic of Habitats and Interactions the Year 7 students learnt about symbiotic relationships, food webs and human impacts on the environment, both positive and negative.

They also had the chance to dissect a squid, where they had to identify the gills, the gonads and try to extract some ink from the ink sac without rupturing the intestines!

The Year 7 students have also been learning about the different properties of substances, by looking at the particle model, states of matter and the difference between physical and chemical properties.

To illustrate the property of density students had to make some colourful density towers by layering coloured solutions with different amounts of sugar dissolved in each.

When looking at biodegradability students got the chance to make some edible slime where they explored the physical properties of their sugar laden concoction.

Last but not least, students investigated Mixture and Separations. To do this, students performed experiments exploring the solubility and insolubility of different substances, such as kerosine, cooking oil, copper carbonate and copper sulphate. The results of these experiments highlight the consequences of using these substances in regard to wastewater treatment and sewage. They have been observing how reactions occur by lighting methane gas trapped in bubbles on fire. While holding them, of course!

In addition to her High Distinction Award Madeleine was also named the State Champion for the History Competition for the whole state of Victoria. This is a fantastic achievement by Madeleine and her class teacher Christopher, who encouraged her to take part in the competition.

Technology

Textiles

Mrs van Deventer’s Textiles Technology class made aprons for their assessment. Students have completed their aprons ahead of time and to a very high standard. The students were very happy with all the skills that they have learned from designing, cutting out fabric and sewing using the sewing machine.

Food Technology

Mrs van Deventer’s Year 7 Food Technology class made their own pizzas for their practical assessment. The students looked at the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and they chose their own ingredients to make their pizzas. Every group planned, ordered their ingredients and made successful pizzas. The students were happy with their outcomes and they were pleased that their hard work has paid off so well.
