A little more from Dr Justin Coulson’s Happy Families Facebook page

We all know and love the entire Heeler family. So coming up to Father’s Day we needed to have a chat today on the Happy Families Podcast about our favourite cartoon Dad!

There's something extra special about Bandit, the dad we can all relate to. It’s a refreshing experience to have a real AND positive representation of fatherhood in the media that doesn’t focus on cheap laughs, or depict a bumbling, goofy fool who does nothing to help.

The writers of Bluey have thrown these unhelpful stereotypes out the door, and have instead created a loveable character who inspires and encourages men in their journey through fatherhood. One who has a meaningful role in his job, but who also contributes within the home, particularly when it comes to relationships.

So what is it about Bandit that makes him Top Dog and how can he inspire us this Fathers Day?

How to Dad like Bandit in 10 easy steps:

Be patient

Be present

Be real (hands up who can relate to Bandit scrolling on his phone during hide and seek, or just wanting to sit and read his newspaper)

Interact with your kids regularly and often

Tell your kids you love them to bits - don't assume they know this

Give your children space

Give your children autonomy

No power plays - just talk to your offspring like you actually enjoy their company and genuinely like them.

Hold firm and appropriate limits and expectations (in line with the developmental capacity of your little ones)

Have some fun!

The brilliance of Bluey lies in the simplicity of every episode. The plotlines are really quite minimal and the ensuing drama is VERY relatable (busting for a wee, a spilled drink, running late).

I think we can all agree that parenting is exhausting, and that nothing is easy or straightforward ever again.

And on that note, we can celebrate Bandit for showing us that we don't have to be a perfect Dad, just a PERFECTLY IMPERFECT one; present, playful and participating in relationships.

Helping our children to stay safe online: Tik Tok

The Carly Ryan foundation https://www.carlyryanfoundation.com/ is an amazing South Australian based organisation which provides online safety, cyberbullying and proactive strategies to help our young people navigate the online space.

Attached is a fact sheet about Tik Tok:

Some key takeaways:

  • The age rating in the App store is 12+
  • It is a popular social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short music videos.
  • Some of the challenges is that Tik Tok users can search for other users and view their location/city.
  • Information about how to delete, block and report inappropriate behaviour is outlined on the attachment.

Ongoing monitoring and questioning ensures your children are using apps like Tik Tok safely and only communicating with known people.

Father’s Day Stall

Father’s Day Stall is TOMORROW. St Paul will be having a Father’s Day stall on the morning of Thursday 1 September (Term 3 Week 6) coordinated by Jess Deer and our amazing office team. Gifts range from $2.00-$7.00 and children are able to purchase a maximum of 3 gifts. The QKR app is now closed but your child is able to bring cash for their purchases. We recommend that no more than $15 is brought for the stall. If you are able to volunteer, please email Jess Deer jdeer@stpaulba.sa.edu.au

Unfortunately leftover tokens will not be able to be refunded, however there will be a variety of $1 gifts available to purchase. Any leftover tokens will be donated to the Australian Lutheran World Service charity.
