Careers explored with workplace visits and visitors

On the 30th of August the Year 9s participated in an excursion around Fryers St and surrounding areas, where we went to Noble Monks, Teller Collective and the GV Library. We went to these places to get a sense of what it would be like to work in these environments. Teller Collective is a cafe and restaurant on Fryers St. They were very informative. They told us about what qualities they look for in employees and a bit about how they run their business.

Noble Monks, another restaurant, this time on Maude St, talked about their journey as a business. The library was very informative on the subject of what it would be like to work in that environment. Each place was unique and had different things to say. The whole day was very relaxed and everyone seemed to have a good time. My personal favourite place we visited was the Teller Collective; they were very informative and had a lot of good tips. All in all the day was a great way to conclude the Year 9 excursions, and it was a very enjoyable day.

Over the past few weeks, the Year 9 cohort has been privileged to be visited by many members of the community. Having been asked to choose, I would have to say Tunya Jarvis was my favourite. Tunya is a nurse, having worked as such for 20 years, and she presented herself wonderfully. She was powerful and confident, taking control of the room while still leaving room for students to ask questions. In fact, she encouraged it, and some people even stayed during lunch to talk to her! Her presentation was one of the most informative, and, although we received a lot of visits from people working in the medical industry, Tunya was a stand-out. She dealt with some of the more disruptive kids spectacularly, and kept almost everyone enraptured throughout the entirety of the time she spent talking, as mentioned above. All incursions were excellent, I enjoyed them greatly, but from my perspective, Tunya’s was the best.

On the 23rd of August we had five police officers come in and speak about being a police officer. They taught us all about the recruitment process and what a police officer needs in their day to day. Our group was spoken to by Sharni; she spoke mainly about the recruitment process and what skills you would need as a police officer. Sharni was very interesting and great at getting us to talk about different parts of the job. Sharni was really chilled and easy to talk to in our groups. We really appreciated the officers' time and we thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
