STUDENT LOANS

As we reach the end of term could I please remind students and parents that everyone is able to login to Oliver V5 (our school cataloguing system) to check the books you have on loan. As previously advised, access to Oliver is through Compass. Please try to keep your loans up to date. Overdue lists have been given to your teachers this week and it would be good if you could have a look for any missing books over the holidays. If you have any enquiries regarding missing or lost resources please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you.

You might also like to enjoy some extra holiday reading. Don’t forget you can download ebooks and audiobooks through Oliver V5 as well.

GREATER DANDENONG LIBARIES

Please note that the Springvale and Dandenong Libraries have contacted me several times this year regarding Rowville Primary School books being returned to the wrong library. Please check the barcodes and Rowville Primary School labels and stamps on our resources before you return them. Thank you.

VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge has closed for 2022. I am pleased to say that most of our students completed this year’s Reading Challenge. It has been a busy year of reading with the Book Week Reading Champion, Rowville Primary School's Read-a-thon as well as the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Our students are becoming very well read!

For the Reading Challenge it was great to see that our students read a total of 9773 books over the course of the year. The Most Read books were Family Tree by Josh Pyke (this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime title) and The Day the Crayons Quit (one of our teachers' favourites!). The two Top Rated books were 1001 Cool Gross Jokes and Fantastic Earth Facts and the two School Top Favourite books were Cyclone by Jackie French and Possum Magic by Mem Fox (an Australian Classic).

WHODUNNIT, EDDIE WOO?

I was very interested to have a look at Eddie Woo’s first junior fiction series titled Whodunnit, Eddie Woo? If you are not familiar with Eddie he is known as the Maths guy! He has his own YouTube (WooTube!) Channel where he teachers maths theory. His YouTube channel has 123 million global views and 1.4 million subscribers! Children all over the world also contact Eddie to help them with their mathematics homework. To add a little more interest to his story he was named Australia’s Local Hero of the Year (2018) and shortlisted as one of the Top 10 teachers in the world.

So recognising his name I picked up his first two junior fiction novels and was pleased to read them! If you are curious, love solving maths problems and mysteries by uncovering clues and enjoy good stories this is the series for you. The first two titles are Time Out! and Team Trouble. I hope you enjoy this fun new series.

ROALD DAY DAY

This week be delighted, overjoyed and over-the-mooned to celebrate Roald Dahl Day. The official day of celebration is 13 September which was Roald Dahl’s birthday. His books are unique and still extremely popular with children all over the world.  Who could forget The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Twits, Esio Trot, Danny the Champion of the World, The Magic Finger, James and the Giant Peach, George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Witches and of course Fantastic Mr Fox. Our students and teachers love them all!

Roald Dahl also wrote about his life in the two titles Boy: Tales of Childhood and Going Solo. They give us a clear insight into how his life influenced his storytelling. Roald Dahl even has his own Revolting Recipes Cookbook, several joke books and a dictionary! The Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary blurb says “this dictionary will inspire you to choose and use each and every word brilliantly in your own writing – whether it’s a real word, a Roald Dahl word or your own made-up one!” This is no ordinary dictionary that’s for sure and I really like the added extra facts relating to Roald Dahl's books which are found throughout. The wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake make this dictionary something special.

Roald Dahl is inspirational and I enjoy reading his quotes. He said “A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men” (from Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator) and one of my favourite Roald Dahl quotes (from The Minpins novel) is “and above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”

Enjoy the world of Roald Dahl!
