Dear Members of the Academy Community,

Whenever our Senior Student Leaders are asked to reflect on being an Academy student or are asked to address an external group, they always highlight the word community – the fact we are a community united by our six Mercy values – Respect, Compassion, Justice, Service, Hospitality and Courage and our Mercy charism.

We are conscious, too, that community embraces more than simply the staff and students at the Academy and I was reflecting on this when thinking about the events of the recent times and the forthcoming calendar of events.

Last week, the College Advisory Council members participated in the VRQA School Review and last Monday the Council met to deliberate about the 2023 College budget.

Next week, the Parents’ Association will meet and explore some ideas with our Marketing consultant and, of course, we have a number of events scheduled in the weeks to come which are very much community events and celebrate the breadth of the Academy.  I refer to the forthcoming Fathers’ Day Breakfast, the Significant Person Afternoon Tea, and of course, our key day of celebration – Mercy Day on Friday 9 September. Schools are such multi-faceted organisations where all are welcome and all have something to contribute.

The recent Parent/Teacher interviews also highlight the strong connection of parents to the College, with over 2500 interviews taking place.

Also next week, a number of students, accompanied by our two Deputy Principals – Ms Fiona Lennon and Mr Sam Di Camillo and English Learning Leader, Ms Fiona Tassone will travel to Emmanuel College, Warrnambool to participate in the Mercy Frayne Speech Festival.  We wish our Debaters and Public Speakers well.  We know they will do us proud.  Each year, this festival is another reminder of the wider Mercy community of schools.

All parents and families are invited to our Mercy Day Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral, 9 September, with the Mass being celebrated by our College Chaplain, Father Peter Varengo.

Every blessing,

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.   Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.   Philippians 2:3–4

Loving Father,

Thank you for all who are part of our Academy community.  Grant them your encouragement, wisdom and peace.

We pray the Academy would be a place of great discovery, adventure and creativity. May it be a place where we love to learn and where we learn to love.  A place where everyone is respected and all are deeply valued.

Thank You for the diverse personalities, abilities, passions and ways of seeing the world that you’ve placed around us. Open our eyes to those who are rejected, powerless, oppressed or overlooked. Comfort and restore those in our community living under shadows of unhappiness, abuse, pain or fear.
