LANGUAGES

Last week, as part of their studies on Post World War II Emigration, the Year 11 VCE Italian class with their teacher, Prof Camera, participated in an excursion to the COASIT Immigration Museum and later a forum on Italian Cinemas in Melbourne From Post World  War II to The Movie Show.

Having watched short clips on Bello Onesto Emigrato, They’re a Weird Mob and Piange il Telefono, we walked to COASIT on Lygon street and commenced a tour of the museum.  Upon arrival, we watched and listened to stories of the emigrants' experiences of making the journey over to Australia, and examined photos of families and many young Italians. During the tour, we immersed ourselves in the hardships and determination of the Italian community during post-World War II times. The students completed a Co As It booklet, which encouraged language development and further crystalised these seminal years of Italian emigration to Melbourne students. The students also pointed out many of the items that their Nonni still had at home.  The connection many generations on, still clearly thriving in 2022.

Before attending the Forum,  we enjoyed an authentic Italian dinner at Ti Amo, which has been serving up delicious Italian food since the 50s. The students ordered their meals and conversed in Italian and it felt very much like we were sitting in a trattoria in Rome! Returning to Co As It,  we attended the Forum with guests Santo Cilauro, Elisabetta Ferrari, Mark Nicholls, Susanna Scarparo, and Carlo and Giovanni Zeccola. We listened to stories recounted about the 1960-70s Italian cinema atmosphere, as well as discovered the importance these films had, not only for the Italian community but for our own sense of belonging to the Italian culture. When a class member, Sophia Anastasiadis spoke about the significance of the forum for young people, she was enthusiastically applauded, having represented the school well.

When the session was over, the students conversed with Santo and discussed his work and his contribution to the Italian community. He was also super generous with his time, encouraged us to pursue our passions, and stressed the importance of collaboration and determination.  The Globo newspaper celebrated our attendance at the forum by chatting with us and snapping a pic of us with the view of exploring young people's connection to their Italian culture.

The 11 VCE Italian class undoubtedly deepened their understanding of Italian culture, the struggles and the triumphs of the Italian emigration experience and are now interviewing their own Nonni, or a borrowed one, which is proving to be a rewarding experience. They will then compile a booklet of these stories in Italian.

STUDENT COUNSELLOR

Body image and self-esteem issues are common sources of unhappiness and concern for adolescent girls. And for the most part we apportion blame to the media, peer pressure and societal expectations. However, often, the source of the problem is closer to home. What most parents don’t realize is that their own thoughts and feelings about weight, appearance and body image have a huge impact on their child’s relationship with their own body.

The Age article “How to help our kids feel better about their bodies” by Dr Zali Yager is worth reading and may help parents re-evaluate their beliefs and be more mindful about the messages that are convey to children about their body and self-worth.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me. I am available throughout the week for a conversation either by phone or an arranged appointment.
