Book Week

Book Week is just around the corner and the Junior School students are all talking about what they are going to wear to the Book Week Parade! The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has been bringing us Book Week since 1945! During this time, schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. We tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. This year, the theme is “Dreaming with Eyes Open”.

Students have been discussing their dreams for the future and exploring the shortlisted books during library classes. Books are a wonderful way to help open up conversations and explore complex issues, helping to inform and encourage new perspectives, teaching the need to listen to other voices, to spark awareness and build empathy and care for those who may have experienced injustice and misfortune. Books also bring us a connection to story, our loved ones and make us grateful for the joy of living a wonderful life here in Australia.

Book Face Friday

The Library is seeking clever students and staff to enter a "Bookface Friday" Competition. What is “Bookface” and how do you do it you ask? Bookface is a participatory photo game in which people place a book cover in front of their face to reveal a "hybrid face" of the subject and the image on the cover of the book. "Bookface” involves strategically lining up your face or another body part alongside a book cover that features a matching body part so that there appears a melding of life and art. The Library will be running a competition for Book Week in Week Six. Working with a partner, create a “bookface”. We will display them in the library. The winning entry will receive a Paperbark voucher. We already have some great entries in the front foyer of the Library. Australian School Library Day

Australian School Library Day (ASLD) will also be celebrated next Wednesday during Book Week. Please see the infographic below for insight into some of the invaluable things school libraries can do for children across Australia.

Teen Reading Survey

During Book Week, some English classes will complete the Teen Reading Survey. This research investigates young Australians’ leisure reading tastes and practices and the people and systems that influence their choices. Parents of students in these classes will receive an email about the survey and can “Opt Out” if they do not wish their child to complete the survey.
