Elective Subjects for 2023

This week, all students in Years Seven, Eight and Nine will receive an email to invite them to select their electives for 2023. The email explains the process for submitting their electives online and the choices that are available to them.

Students going into Year Eight are required to do Digital Technologies, one Visual Arts course, one Performing Arts course and one Design and Technologies course. There are several choices in each area to select from. Families can use the Year Eight 2023 Electives (gsg.wa.edu.au) PowerPoint (located at MyGSG>Middle School>Year Seven) to assist with the selection process.

In Year Nine, students do not have any restrictions on the subject areas and they can choose from 19 different electives that GSG have to offer. Most of these units are studied for one semester. There is a great range of choices that have the power to pique the interest of every student.

In Year Ten, electives are studied in depth for the whole year leading into Years Eleven and Twelve. Year Tens choose two electives.

My advice to students and families is to look at two things in particular:

  • Is there something I really want to study in the future?
  • Am I passionate about this subject and could it lead me down my career pathway?

If so, by starting early, you will get a real insight into the subject area and what is required in the future. Alongside this, is there a subject that I really want to try as I have never done it before and may never get the chance to do it again? This may appeal to you as a hobby or a point of difference.

There are some tough choices to be made and typically students will want to do more subjects than we have time for at school. A booklet with all the details about each elective will come out with the email.

SEQTA

Staff at school use SEQTA on a daily basis. Putting in lessons, recording results, noting pastoral comments, adding commendations and so much more. It is a great resource for families, obviously to see the results from assessments but you can also see the upcoming assessments,  lesson plans where you can see what your child is studying, and even homework that may be assigned for the week. If you are not as familiar with SEQTA as you would like to be, please spend 15 minutes with your child this weekend and ask them to show you how they use SEQTA at school. Our students are very lucky to have their own laptop and they are developing expertise in how this great technology can help them study, gain knowledge and confidence. This weekend would be a great time for them to show you what they know.

Write a Book in a Day

Journey to the Heart by the Grammar Greats was the amazing short story written and illustrated by a group of Year Seven and Eight students last Friday. With eight hours to write, the team utilised the parameters they were given; researcher, jockey, drone, service station and a roof that had caved in, along with their random words; tiptoe, fresh, community, delight and bruised, to create an entertaining piece of prose.

The event, which raises money for The Kids’ Cancer Project, saw students engaged in an incredibly creative way, sharing ideas and developing a whole new world. Finished stories, from schools across the country, will now be distributed to children currently in hospital receiving treatment for cancer. The team hopes that their adventurous story of a man and his talking horse, brings joy to those who read it.
