David Bell Cup Hockey Carnival

On Sunday morning at 10.45am, the Senior Boys Hockey Team got to school to start the trip up to Perth. On the way out of Albany, Daniel Fisher was our tour guide and, with the help of the party box speaker, he kept the spirits high. We got to our destination (Metro Inn Hotel) at around 5.00pm. After we got ourselves set up in our rooms, Mr Scott called us all out to go for a walk down to the foreshore. What we didn’t know was that when we got down there, we were going to do some running to prepare us for the day ahead. At the conclusion of our exercise, we had one final race, with our teams being the same as our rooms. We had a relay to determine dinner: pizza from Dominoes. Later that night we had shirt presentations and a team meeting to go over everything we needed to know. We then went to bed in order to be up and raring to go for the carnival.

The next day we got up at 6.30am to get ready and pack everything back into the bus for the trip home. We had an awesome cooked breakfast. On the way to the hockey turf, Ben Ross was connected to the party box playing some upbeat music, to get the boys pumped for some quality hockey. We warmed up on the turf, opposite the Australia’s futures squad, with Daniel getting some tips from the Australian Goalkeeper.

Our first opponent was Bunbury Cathedral Grammar, to whom we lost 3-0, which was a bit disappointing as we had plenty of shots on goal but we didn’t quite gel as a team. Then, we played Shenton College, and we lost, 5-0. They had some outstanding players and we spent a lot of time defending.

Our next game was against John XXIII, where we won, 2-0, with Jack Carlson finding the net with a drag flick, then joined in the scoring by Kaden Patterson, with a hit after a corner scramble.

Our final game was against Como, where we lost 5-0. Hamish Medway did a great job tagging their main striker and keeping him to only a few touches. Ben Ross had a good game and broke open the Como defence on a few occasions. Overall, we finished fourth. We learnt a lot and our hockey got better with each game. The bus trip back was quiet, with everybody tired from the day. We all really enjoyed this carnival and looking forward to Country Week in two weeks' time.

Thanks to Mr Scott and Mr Sarre for taking us.
