Australian Education Awards

Last Saturday I attended the Australian Education Awards where the School was an Excellent Awardee in the category of Regional School of the Year. The event was held in Sydney with over 600 guests from schools around Australia. Could I offer my congratulations to Fraser Coast Anglican College in Hervey Bay, Queensland, announced as the winner of this category. It is a wonderful achievement for GSG to be recognised at a national level.

Cinesnaps Finalists

Congratulations to Henry Baker (Year Twelve), Colin Ferreira (Year Nine), Maxwell Cruse (Year Seven), Edward Baker (Year Seven) and Thomas North (Year Seven) for being announced as finalists in the 2022 Cinesnaps Short Film Competition.

Their short films will be shown during the CinefestOZ Film Festival next week in Busselton. Read the full announcement here.

Australian School Library Day

The inaugural Australian School Library Day (ASLD) will be celebrated on Wednesday 24 August 2022, during Book Week. It is the perfect opportunity to highlight outstanding Australian children's literature and the important work Australian school libraries do. The research is undeniable - every school needs a well-resourced school library and a qualified teacher-librarian. GSG is one of very few schools in our region that have a qualified Teacher Librarian in Ms Elinor Couper, who holds recognised qualifications in both teaching and librarianship. Teacher librarians support and implement the vision of their school communities through advocating and building effective library and information services and programs that contribute to the development of lifelong learners. The teacher librarian is both an educator and an information manager with integrated understandings from both areas. Of high importance to Ms Couper is facilitating a love of learning and reading in our students.

Teachers

Teacher shortages have been a topic of debate across the nation over the past week. This national issue is being addressed with a team of academics who will present their findings later this year. The topics to be covered by the inquiry include teacher salaries, time at school, developing a national recruitment strategy and reducing administrative and working loads to keep current teachers as well as attract more people to the profession. As a father of two graduate teachers, I know that the challenges new teachers face can be overwhelming. We need to continue to value teachers, support graduate teachers, and highlight the positive aspects of educating our young people. The joy of teaching can be found in making a difference to the students we teach. This needs to continue for the development of our community.
