3/4 News

Another term has flown by and the year is disappearing before our eyes.

Firstly....

We hope the dads all had a fabulous Father's Day and enjoyed the treasures their children purchased and made. We hope that the few injuries have repaired themselves after the Footy Match too.

Literacy

Our current Literacy focus has been based around our class novel, “Meet Grace” by Sofie Laguna. We have enjoyed reading about the young girl named Grace who lived in London under terrible circumstances. Poor Grace ended up doing a crime and got sent to travel by a convict ship to Australia.

We have enjoyed exploring and developing our own writing skills by investigating how clauses and conjunctions expand sentences and create more engagement for the reader. This has also included using commas for good effect. Through writing our own version of a convict child's diary we have been able to understand how each student has interpreted and understood life in the convict era.

Next week we hope to write our good copies of the diaries and publish them to bring home. We hope you enjoy those when they are shared with you.

It has also been pleasing to see some improvement in the standard of book work and handwriting in general. We have been having dedicated lessons and encouraged the use of the videos in Seesaw. It would be good for students to also view these at home so that they can continue to improve their homework presentation too.

Here are some samples of particularly good work that we would love all children to aspire to…(it was hard to narrow it down to just a few...but we will post some each newsletter 🧐)

Maths

Our previous topic was area and perimeter and we loved seeing the overall improvement in post test scores. It was good to see the students using their times tables facts to assist with calculating the area. We calculated the perimeter and area of simple squares and rectangles and it was wonderful to see the “ahh haa” moment when they discovered that there is a formula to assist.  It was also good to see the work done in their homework, where the children had to put their knowledge to work independently.

Our current unit is all about the AFL and looking at Statistics and Data.

We have posed questions, gathered data efficiently and then used bar graphs to show our data. The interesting thing is we created some questions to pose for our friends and classmates to use to interpret the data. They asked questions like

What was the highest score?

What was the lowest score?

What was the difference between highest and lowest?

Some students investigated further and even calculated the averages from their data.

It was a fun way to round off the AFL season and to see a real life application of Maths skills.

Inquiry

As mentioned in Literacy, we have been focussing on the First Fleet and the Convict era and our inquiry focus is to take into account the indigenous perspective of the day when the First fleet arrived and the resulting ramifications. It has been pleasing to see the maturity and sensible viewpoints in these young minds. Our class conversations have been profound and gratifying to say the least. We also enjoyed presenting to our classmates our slide shows on each of the ships and sharing some peer feedback.

Kinder visits

These have continued and we are pleased to be able to confirm they will also be ongoing next term. Up to now we have had 11 visits, and most Yr 4 students have had 3 visits. (3/4T will have their 3rd turn next term).  This week we had 6 of the year 4’s from 3/4L who had a wonderful time playing with our young friends. As always it is a joy to be welcomed by their eager smiles and to see the relationships that has been built over their 3 visits in the past two terms.

Finally, it is with sadness we say goodbye to Miss Zoe Richards next Wednesday when her teaching round finishes. 3/4CM have enjoyed learning from her lessons and the teachers have loved working alongside such an amazing person. We wish her every success when she graduates at the end of this year and we know that she is destined for a fabulous career teaching and guiding her future students.

Until next time,

Miss Richards running our morning routine
Dear Sacred Heart Parish community,
My name is Zoe Richards and I am a fourth year pre-service teacher studying at Australian Catholic University. I have been fortunate enough to have been at Sacred Heart for my final placement. I am so grateful for my time with 3/4CM and have loved every minute of teaching the students. I have built many great relationships with the students in 3/4 and thank them for their kindness and respect to me over my time at Sacred Heart.
My favourite memories over the past few weeks have been Athletics Day, dressing up for Book Week, learning about The First Fleet with 3/4CM and class sport every Thursday. I will miss the students dearly and wish them the best for term 4.
Thank you to all the staff at Sacred Heart Parish for welcoming me into the school community and supporting me along the way. Thank you especially to Ms Collins and the 3/4 teachers for making me feel part of the team and for your support and guidance throughout my placement, I am extremely grateful. I now feel (almost) ready to begin my journey as a teacher and can’t wait to see what 2023 holds.
Thank you and have a safe break!

Regards,

Miss Richards
