R U OK Day at Sacred Hear

As a part of our Respectful Relationships program the whole school celebrated 'R U OK Day' which is a beautiful reminder to stop and ask the people around us how they are 'really' going. In the classroom we have been teaching the students about having important and quality conversations with the people we love.

Through our Respectful Relationships program we have learnt that we have a number of different emotions and they are all normal and its Ok just to be Ok, we don't have to be happy all the time. The classes have worked on and explored the skills that we can use to help us when we might be feeling down. One the major skills is to ask for help and to always talk.

The Year 5/6 students did a wonderful activity of chatting with different students using a name randomiser to create partners.  They were asked to talk about different topics such

  • My favourite place in the world
  • My biggest fear
  • What is my favourite season

It was wonderful to see the students growing in confidence when talking with different people. We are really proud of our students at Sacred Heart and we continue to be excited about the next generation and the mental health stigmas that they are breaking down.

Hero's Journey

During Term 4 our Year 5/6 students will be looking at the 'Hero's Journey' to work within our Respectful Relationships lessons and how we can use it in our own life to improve our mental health. The staff were lucky enough to  work with the brilliant Anna Box, one of our many amazing parents in Term 1 on our Staff Retreat and we found it very valuable. This is a quick podcast from Ben Crowe explaining what the Hero's Journey is and more importantly how it can be taught in schools.

The whole idea of the Hero’s Journey is that it’s the real story of life - or the "no-filters" experience of being alive, struggles and all. We’re born, we pass through childhood to the messiness of adolescence, eventually being spat out into adulthood where we face more internal and external conflicts on the next round of adventure.

Because these patterns are so recurring, the Hero’s Journey framework can be an incredibly powerful tool for us to navigate change and uncertainty. When we can move through each of the 3 Chapters, we can come to terms with who we are, what we're made of, and what we're here to do in this weird and wonderful world. This is exactly what we want our students here at Sacred Heart to understand and prepare them for their future.

Keep an eye out for more information & updates in the newsletter throughout the year.
