Writing a Book in a Day!

Last Thursday, more than 80 students gathered in the TAS building to begin their huge day of writing at 8am. Collaborating in teams they worked for 12 hours (!) to write and illustrate an entire book.

The books were entered in a competition to be judged later this year. More importantly, the teams were writing for the books to be published and given to children in hospital being treated for cancer. The competition is run by Kids Cancer Project and, as well as providing entertainment for children in hospital, teams raised money for research into cancer. To date our teams have raised over $5000!

We would like to congratulate all the students involved. The teams were justifiably proud of the work they did together to produce an entire book in a day.The TAS building was abuzz with excitement, creativity and team work. There were computers, papers, art supplies and conversation everywhere. It was a huge day, but definitely worth every minute!

5/6 learn how to be servant leaders

On Tuesday, a group of students from Years 5/6 had the opportunity to participate in FIT (Followers In Training) run by the fantastic CRU team.

Student leaders from Nowra Anglican College and Shellharbour Anglican College joined with us as we were taught what it means to be servant leaders, following the example of Jesus. We then broke off into electives where we learnt practical leadership skills.

We quickly got to put these skills into practice as we ran 'The greatest CRU group ever!' We really enjoyed getting to know Christians from other schools, learning new skills, playing games and learning more about Jesus.

Thanks to Mrs Perry for organising such a yummy morning tea for us. At FIT, we were challenged to think about how we could be servant leaders, at school, at home, at church and at CRU. Parents and carers, you should ask us about it!

Primary State Athletics Carnival

On Friday, 2 September, the Primary CSSA State Athletics competition took place at Homebush Athletics Centre in Western Sydney. Several students from NCS's primary department made the trip to compete in a variety of running, jumping and throwing events.

Toby G finished his 100 metre race in 16.51 and his 200m in 34.53. Great efforts there, Toby! Amelia P threw the shot put 5.62m and the discus 14.94m, which was about 2.5m further than her PB at school to finish 4th in her event. Well done, Amelia! Caitlin A jumped 2.12m in her long jump event. Way to go, Caitlin! Kim C ran her 200m race in  35.06, shaving almost a second off her school time. Terrific work, Kim! Will P. jumped  2.99m in his long jump event. Great work, Will!

Elsie P had brilliant runs in both her 800m and 1500m events, placing 3rd in both. Elsie P has qualified for the next level of competition, the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) event on Tuesday 20 September at the same venue. We wish her God's blessings as she prepares for this next elite level, against students from other independent schools all over NSW. We look forward to hearing about her exploits!

Special thanks to parents/carers and other family members who transported children to the events.

CSSA Secondary State Basketball Gala Day

by Adele G and Zara H

On Friday 9 September, eight NCS Secondary All Star Basketballers left school at 6am to drive two and half hours up to the daunting Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre. We played five games against 6ft giants.

The All Star players included: Bridget the mighty minion (she got lots of swishes), Zara the not so gentle giant (who did cuts through the key), Alyssa the amazing athlete (who was all around the court and all over everyone), Beth the brute (who got fouled out in our second game but she did some awesome shooting), Adele the author (who wrote this amazing article), Claire the courageous crusader (who was stealing rebounds and shooting them back in), mighty Millie (who managed to get many shots in) and Maddie the muscle (who grabbed the jump balls out of the air).

We played five games but lost due to our shortness and lack of dunking according to Mr Clarke. It was a great day, especially visiting Macca's on the way home. We were very disappointed to find that the frozen custard shop was closed, but Mr Clarke was in the wrong lane anyway…A big thanks to Mrs Toole for coaching us and Mr Clarke for driving the bus. :)

CSSA Secondary State Athletics

by Matt McL and Emily McL

On Thursday 18 August, a selection of NCS Secondary students competed at CSSA state level for athletics at Sydney Olympic Park (SOPAC). The facilities were world class and it was very professional. It was an enjoyable day for all.

'I had lots of fun. I got to see lots of old friends. I competed in the 1500m, 800m, 400m, Javelin, Shot Put and Discus. I got 3rd in the 800m, 2nd in the 400m and 1st in Javelin. I beat my PB in the 400m. I was very happy with all my results' Emily McL

Congratulations to Ollie E, Emily McL and Dan B who will be representing NCS at NSWCIS level later this term.

Miriam competes at the Big Country Hoedown

Miriam Davey enjoyed competing in the 'Big Country Hoedown' line dancing competition in Narrandera over 26-28 August!

It was her first competition with the local 'Your Talent Team' Line Dancing Competition Team. She won a silver medal with the whole team in the 'standard group line dance section - open age'. Mim had a great time doing her two solos in the Under 17 standard and waltz sections.

To top off her experience, she competed in the unique 'Hoedown Showdown' competition with her Junior Section trio... two dances in standard and waltz divisions to make it into the final where they achieved a wonderful 3rd place result.

Miriam has a busy week ahead as she prepares for the NSW Line Dancing Championships in Sydney on 16-18 September.

NCS recognised as founding member of CSA

Mr Bray recently attended the Christian Schools Australia (CSA)'s Leaders' Summit, held in Cairns. At this summit, he was proud to be presented with a 20 Years Membership Plaque on behalf of the school. This plaque, presented by CSA CEO, Daniel Pampuch, recognises NCS as a founding member of the CSA movement.

In 2002, CSA commenced operations with a team of seven pioneering staff, dedicated and committed to the cause of Christian education in Australia. CSA provides a wide range of support to schools, and the wider community, through the advancement of Christian education in Australia and internationally.

This year, Christian Schools Australia celebrates its 20th Anniversary. In the last 20 years they have seen the growth of CSA membership from 132 schools, teaching over 40,000 students in 2002 to 148 schools, operating on 183 sites, educating some 72,000 students all across the country. Under God, the vision and blessing of Christian education in Australia continues to grow to fruition, and to provide excellent opportunities and access to young people all across the country.

NCS is proud to be a founding member of this important organisation. Prior to this, NCS was a member of Christian Community Schools, the predecessor organisation to CSA.
