Principal Report, Year Level & OSHC News

From the Principal...

What a busy few weeks! Term 3 is always an exciting time with events like Book Week, Year 3 Camp, our Korean Incursion, House Athletics – just to name a few! The students have thoroughly enjoyed all these additional activities and much effort has been put in to organising them by our staff. I would like to thank all staff who attended camp, as this was the first time some of our year 3 students had been away overnight. Thank you to Joshua Woollan, Lorrie Dell, Teresa Fountain, Michael Pannam and Sue Rimmer. I also want to acknowledge all our specialist staff who have organised events to do with Sport, STEAM, and the Visual Arts. Make sure you seek out the wonderful photos included in this newsletter.

Amongst all of this, I have been involved with a whole school review at Tucker Rd PS. My role was as their challenge partner over two days. The experience was highly beneficial for me, as our school has our own review early in term One, 2023. I will be talking with school council at the next meeting about the expectations of a whole school review and how our community can get involved.

Student Led Conferences

Tuesday September 6th, 2022 – 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm

To celebrate your child’s achievements in the classroom, we would like to invite parents/friends to come and view their child/children’s learning journey. Student Led Conferences are a valued component of each student’s assessment. This is an opportunity for students to highlight and evaluate their learning in the classroom. It enables students to share exemplar work with their families and to inform them of their learning goals and successes to date.

Each session runs for 15 minutes in the child’s classroom. Multiple sessions can run at the same time. The session is led entirely by the student with the teacher present to oversee all conversations. A hard copy of the notice will come home with your child today and we have attached a digital version below and on Compass.

Staffing

There have been two significant morning teas recently to farewell two very experienced teachers – Lorraine Bell and Sally Berryman. We thank both for their years of service to OPS, their supportive leadership and certainly wish them well for the next stage of their lives.

Recently, the school conducted internal interviews for an ongoing position with the school. The successful candidate was Delia Robey, currently teaching in Year 4. We are also working with an educational consultant to finalise our staffing structure for 2023. This is based on enrolment numbers and requires careful considerations.

Enrolments for 2023 - Enrolments are due ASAP!

2023 Foundation enrolments are open. Enrolment forms can be collected at the Office or found on our website.  If you have a child turning 5 by April 30, 2023, please complete an enrolment form and bring in a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunisation record and proof of residence in the school zone and we will process the enrolment.  It helps us enormously with planning, if we have a clear indication of enrolments as early as possible.

Families/Students not returning to OPS in 2023 (Foundation to Year 5)

If you know that your child/children will not be continuing at Ormond Primary School in 2023, please email ormond.ps@education.vic.gov.au as soon as possible.

Please include your child's final day at OPS, the name of the new school they will be attending and a forwarding address if applicable.

If your child is currently in Year 6 - this does not apply to you.

Pupil Free Day - Tuesday 6th September

Our professional practice day is scheduled and approved by school council for Tuesday September 6th which will be a pupil free day. Please contact April at OSHC Program if you require care for your child on this day.

This is also the date set for student led conferences. Please refer below for the booking form.

Student Safety Reminder

Due to an increase in bike traffic during our bike education program, we ask families and students to be extra vigilant when entering and exiting the school. Additional staff will be monitoring this situation and reminding students to be careful. If travelling by car, please remember the places you can safely and legally pick up and drop off students.

Finally, I want to thank the organisers of the ‘Bright Night’ event and Ms Dell and I look forward to seeing many of you there. I am sure it will be a fabulous evening!

Parent Opinion Survey

We want our Parents, Caregivers & Guardians to tell us what they think!

The department is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement.

We encourage families to participate in this survey (which will take around 20 minutes). Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

The Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 15 August to Friday 16 September. Please see your Compass Newsfeed to access the survey. Even though life is busy, we value your time in providing your feedback to our school.

Vale Peter Drenen

Many of our parents will be saddened to hear the passing of Peter Drenen after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in mid 2020.

Peter worked as a casual relief teacher during the school term and was part of our holiday program team at Ormond PS for the past 11 years.

He was a creative, positive, energetic educator who was adored by all staff, children & parents. He will be greatly missed and remembered with such fond memories.

We do not intend to inform the children of Peter’s passing, parents are welcomed to do so if they feel inclined.

Library News

Book Club now open

Scholastic book club is open for this term. Issue 6 has been sent home with your child.

As you are aware each order Ormond receives a credit to buy books for the school library. This is our only fundraiser for the school library so all orders are much appreciated.

Order date will close on Monday 29th August for school delivery, this will ensure the children have the books before the school holidays.

If you are ordering for presents and don't want the orders sent home with your child, please notify the office by email requesting that it be put aside for you to collect.

Overdue books

Parents can you please ensure students are returning their borrowed books each week.

We have a large volume of overdue books that are not being returned. Your child does not have to wait for their library day, as the school library has a returns chute just inside the door, where books can be returned at all times.

Thank you for your support

Book Week Celebrations

Book Week 2022- Dreaming with Your Eyes Open

Congratulations to everyone for dressing up to celebrate Book Week, the costumes were very impressive. The students celebrated by reading shortlisted books, participating in cross-age book activities and meeting in the hall to show their costumes and favourite books. Overall, it was great to see students sharing their love of books.

You can check to see if your favourite book won by watching the special 2022 Book of the Year announcement on YouTube.

Year Foundation- Year 2 Book Week afternoon.

The Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed a cross age afternoon to celebrate Book Week. They heard a shortlisted book and completed a craft activity together. It was a wonderful afternoon enjoyed by all.

MS Read-a-thon

This August, Ormond Primary School will be participating in the MS Readathon!

The MS Readathon inspires kids to read as much as they can, all for one incredible cause. The rules are simple. Read whatever you like, as much as you can, throughout the month of August. Best of all, by joining our quest, not only will you awaken a love of reading, you will also be helping kids who have a parent with multiple sclerosis.

But we need YOUR support. Will you please sponsor your child to read for the MS Readathon?

You can donate or register your child by clicking on this link: https://www.msreadathon.org.au/fundraisers/ormond-primary-school-3204

If you register asap, you could receive an MS Readathon t-shirt. There are lots of resources on the website including sponsorship forms. When registered, you can access an email template so you can contact relatives who may want to encourage your child to read and sponsor them.

We would love to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful cause. So let’s all get reading!

Your donation will fund vital support services for people living with MS and other neurological conditions, like the amazing Family Camps where kids can spend time with other kids who understand what it's like to have a parent with MS. These camps help families living with MS to spend quality time together and learn more about multiple sclerosis.

Thank you so much for your support!

Year 3 News

On the 22 of August the Year 3 students went on their first ever two day camp at Adanac, Yarra Junction.

The students enjoyed their time and smiles on their faces were plenty. Although the weather was not ideal, in between the rain we were able to participate in a variety of activities such as hut building, archery, the flying fox and disc golf. In their free time, the gaga pit and the trampolines were very popular choices. New skills were learned and practiced playing table tennis and bombardment just to name a few. All the staff attending the camp were so proud of each child and their attitude to trying new things.

Year 4 News

The Year 4 students have been exploring cubic volume in maths.

They had to work cooperatively in groups to build a structure using solid shapes.

Then they had to solve the problem.....What is the total volume of our building?

Elsternwick Eco Park Excursion

Students will be heading out on a fun and exciting excursion in a few weeks to the Elsternwick Eco Park.

Please ensure you complete the consent and payment on compass by the due date.

Students will be provided with a sausage sizzle lunch. If your child has any dietary/allergy requirements please be sure to inform your class teacher as soon as possible.

Year 5 News

On Tuesday, the 16th of August, 20 lucky Ormond students, including me, had the opportunity to learn from a professional speed cuber, Jack Cai.

Jack Cai is a 3 x World Record holder for blindfolded Rubik’s Cube!

With Jack, we got to learn really cool tricks and algorithms from the CFOP method, and we finally had someone to answer all our questions! We learnt some memorization tricks to help us remember the algorithms.

He even did a blindfolded demonstration and afterwards, let us take selfies with him. It was an amazing experience and I hope that he can come back to Ormond in the future, so more lucky students can have the same experience that I really enjoyed!

Thanks to Mrs Kah for organising Jack Cai’s visit.

We are starting a Rubik Cube club on Fridays (first half of lunch) for Years 3 to 6, to help teach other students how to cube. All students welcome!

Year 5 Poetry

In Year 5 we have been reading and writing poetry for the past five weeks. We read a lot of poetry before we started to write our own. We also worked on our descriptive writing skills before we started. We analysed some of Joyce Sidman’s poetry based on scientific facts and research. Such as ‘Welcome to the Night’, ‘Love Poem of the Primrose Moth’ and ‘Dark Emperor’.

In our writing lessons, we focused on three areas of poetry. Poems that rhymed, poems that use similes and the five senses, cinquain poems and free verse poems. Our descriptive skills really helped in writing cinquain and 5 sense poems. We brainstormed words then looked them up on Thesaurus.com to find better words to use, expanding our vocabulary
