Ms. Christine Barnes - Head of Health, Wellness and Sport

Winter Sports

All teams have been preparing for this weekend’s return to QG Fixtures which is great news. Could we please reinforce the requirement for all girls who have signed up to play in a QG team to attend both training sessions. Performances each weekend are a direct result of the training and preparation that has taken place during the week.  If not all team members are there, it makes it very hard for our coaching staff to get the best out of our teams. It is also important to note that QG training will continue through exam block as the research overwhelmingly supports maintaining physical activity as it is proven to enhance exam performance. Full details of this weekend’s away fixtures against Somerville House are located on the College app.

Athletics

Training continued on Monday afternoons at Bowden Park and will do so for the remaining 3 weeks of term. Wednesday and Friday mornings will remain here at the College even on days where we attend an afternoon meet. Ideally, we would like all squad members available on Monday afternoons and Friday meets to assist with team selection. From Week 7, girls will record times, distance and heights for each event so we can compile our most competitive team for QG Athletics on Thursday 16 September. Full details of training can be found on the College app.

The Athletics Team will be named in Week 9 based on Inter-House carnival results but also the more current training results. As girls can only compete in 3 individual events and a relay at QG, what events girls are placed in needs to be very strategic, as we need the best overall team for a good team performance. The girls’ training passports are a great guide for the girls to track their improvements and compare their data with others to see what events they are tracking towards for the carnival. All girls who attend training are given a passport to complete and track their performance. We encourage all girls listed in the training squad group to attend, so we develop a greater depth of athletes from which the team can be selected.

Term 4 Sports

Badminton trials have now been completed and team training has commenced as of Tuesday morning in the PE centre for all Years 7 to 9 girls. A full training schedule can be found on the College app and the Croc Board. Please ensure you check the app each week for the training update as there are some location changes from week to week.

Junior softball training commences next week for all girls. This year with our juniors we are trialling a new approach. All teams will train on a Tuesday afternoon for gameplay training, however, specialist training will occur each Thursday lunch with a focus on pitching, catching and batting.  Full details for team training sessions can be found on the College app and Croc Board. Please note, if girls cannot make both team sessions, they are asked to attend any other session that suits their schedule to ensure they are ready to compete when we return in Term 4. The Years 10 to 12 teams will play on Saturday 9 October and Years 7 & 8 will play on Saturday 16 October. Full details will come closer to the end of Term 3.

QG is introducing AFL into the sporting program and in Term 4 there will be a number of introductory sessions run in weeks 2 to 6 and with 2 Gala days in weeks 5 and 6 on Saturday mornings. Each Gala day will consist of a number of games being played with modified rules, to begin with, full details to come later this term. The sign-up interest sheet was on the Croc Board in Week 7 and will be taken down on Friday 27 August, however, if any girls are still interested and want to add their name to the list, please ask them to come and see Ms Barnes in Room 1.

Volleyball Academy - Whole Year Program

The Clayfield Volleyball Academy continues every Monday from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the PE Centre. Please see Ms Barnes if your daughter is keen to join to collect the paperwork. Any girls who choose to leave the program MUST send an email to confirm this or payments will still be added to your College fees.

Australian Volleyball has recently sent out information regarding the Talent Identification trials that are due to be held later this month. The flyer can be found on the College App.

Metropolitan North Trials

Metropolitan North has released a revised schedule for the remainder of 2021.

Please note that the dates listed are for the Met North trial, so Independent North trials will be in the weeks leading up to the trial. Please see Ms Barnes if you are interested in attending any of the events to discuss your suitability and the process for trialling. Note that these trials are for experienced players, not those wishing to try a sport.

Elite Sporting Program - Sports Specialist Series

The ESP Sports series 2 continued in Week 7 with a wonderful presentation from Mark Knowles - Hockey Australia’s National Athlete Pathway Program (NAPP) Technical Lead on redefining success. Mark took the girls on a journey through his actions post hockey and what he is doing now. He shared with the girls, some of the techniques he uses currently in his role with elite athletes. Once again, our girls received a tangible and simple activity that has the potential to be life-changing, should they choose to apply it. I have challenged the girls who attended to take on this task and send their goals to me so I can keep them accountable on their journey to success. Very pleasingly, I already have one student take up this challenge and I encourage others to do so as well.

The next session is on Wednesday morning with Sam Armstrong from Peak Nutrition. Sam’s session last term was a highlight for many girls so I am looking forward to what she presents to the girls in this session. I encourage all girls to get to the session by 8:00 am so we can start on time as many girls have been late to date. This does not apply to girls coming from training where they finish at 8:00 am, they should let me know they are coming and give an approximate time for their arrival.

Week 8

  • Wednesday 1 September: Sam Armstrong – Peak Nutrition

Term 4 - Week 2

  • Wednesday 13 October: Natasha Anderson – Girls with Grit

It is wonderful to be able to share student achievements with you. If your son or daughter has achieved a significant result in their sport, please send an email labelled “Student Achievements” to Ms Christine Barnes - cbarnes1@clayfield.qld.edu.au so we can share this achievement with the wider community.
