A reminder that this Friday 20 August is the Environment Group’s Free Dress Day at the College. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we will be unable to fundraise; however, we are using this as an opportunity to raise awareness. Following our theme of “go green” we are asking students to wear green and pledge one action they could take to help the environment. There will be quizzes and videos throughout the week prompting students to think about how they could be more sustainable; including, a re-education of our three-bin system.
Additionally, on Friday 20 August we are very excited to launch our Pastoral Plants program – where each Pastoral Group will receive a plant to look after; all 74 of them! It is hoped that this will help to connect students a little more with the natural world and liven up our classrooms. This initiative was started by Year 10 students Archie Bathe, Eamonn Frawley and Archie Ryan as a part of the Lord Mayor’s Youth Environmental Leadership Network, and mentored by Ms Elizabeth Kenny.
We also have Year 11 and 12s students running a No Plastic Lunchbox Competition in the Primary School. We have done this in the past and have had great results! Boys are encouraged to pack lunches that do not use any soft plastics (like Ziploc bags, glad wrap), alfoil and excess packaging e.g. individually wrapped food, chip packets, etc.
We will also have an eWaste Drive in the morning. Students can deposit any electronic waste – broken wires, technologies, charging cords, computer accessories, phones etc. – into the bins in the morning.
The boys have many more activities planned for Friday. We will do a full wrap-up of the Environment Group’s Free Dress Day in next week’s Newsletter.
