Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

As we’ve all now come accustomed to in these times; sport continues to evolve by the day, at the present moment the AIC Heads of College have approved Rounds 5, 6 and 7 to be played out as per AIC draw; rugby league will be split to home/away fixtures; premierships awarded and no aggregates for tennis, basketball and rugby league.

The Heads of Sport will now plan with the following in mind:

  1. All going well and sport being able to proceed, the remaining Rounds (5-7) will be played as per 2021 draw, adhering to govt and health regulations
  2. To minimize gatherings and co-mingling of students, the Rugby League fixtures will be played as per other team sports in the home and away format (no central venue) as per the 2021 draw. We will have 3 venues operating each week with games being played over 2 fields starting at 8:00am.
  3. Team Premierships to be awarded. The completed games from Round 2 will count towards a premiership. That is, all Year 7 Rugby League, Year 8 Basketball, 2nd IV Tennis and 1st IV Tennis
  4. There will be no aggregate calculation for basketball, rugby league and tennis
  5. We will also be guided by government regulations and venue capabilities for spectators once they are forthcoming.

Obviously, this could change at any time but I just thought I would give you a heads up on the planned direction. I assume when this has been confirmed and we are fully aware of the direction of our government the AIC will release an official statement – not sure when this will be.

Based on the results from House Track and Field Carnival and our first mini-meet, boys were invited to compete at the Met North Championships. As a result of these championships being cancelled due to the pandemic, it is even more important for athletes to commit to our AIC Track and Field Squad training. A full season schedule is posted on the College APP which includes a complete training schedule, list of coaches, list of all AIC meets and much more. All Track and Field coaches will monitor student attendance at all training sessions. We encourage all students to contact their coach if they are unable to make training. Rolls will be taken each week to ensure that those who have been identified as our best athletes attend the sessions and follow through with their commitment as this not only builds character but also the College’s Track and Field program. Parental support on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

We have also organised matches against Padua College for our 1st IV Tennis, 1st V Basketball and 1st and 2nd XIII Rugby League. These games will be played after school at the College on Tuesday 24 August. More specific details to come once we get the all-clear from our State Government.

Individual Achievements

Congratulations to James Leigh and Matthew Magnussen, who have been selected in the Queensland Cyclones pool rescue team to compete at the end of October. We wish these boys the best of luck for this event.

Jackson Grounds continues to excel in baseball. Jackson was recently selected in the U18 Australian Baseball team which is hoping to gain a berth in the 2022 World Championships.
