Ms. Christine Barnes - Head of Health, Wellness and Sport

Winter Sports

All winter sports and athletics have recommenced training this week and will continue to do so unless health advice indicates otherwise. The full training schedule can be found on the College app. A decision has been made, due to the number of disruptions to games, that there will be no pennants awarded this season, similar to last year. Rounds 7, 8 & 9 will continue as scheduled and will still be competitive by nature, regardless of pennants not being awarded.

Again, can we please ask that girls who have committed to these sports please ensure they attend training and games and notify Ms Barnes and their sports coordinator if they cannot attend for any reason.

QGSSSA Athletics

Training has recommenced again this week with good numbers to date. As the QG Athletics rules state, girls can only compete in 3 individual events and 1 relay, meaning we need a number of girls to be available to compete at the QG event. Where possible, we ask girls who have been named in the training squad to attend 2 sessions per week. We know for a number of girls this is not possible, so please just discuss what is possible with Ms Barnes or Mrs Steer.

This week the girls received their passport at training which logs their training data and will also log their most recent times/distance/height. This will allow us to have greater certainty over final team selections and also give girls weekly feedback on how they are going and the improvements they are making.

Training continues on Monday afternoons usually at Bowden Park and Wednesday and Friday mornings here at the College. Please where possible, we would like all squad members available on Monday afternoons, especially from Week 7 when we can hopefully return to Bowden Park for training. Full details of training can be found on the College app.

Term 4 Sports

Over the next two weeks, a number of sports occurring in Term 4 will start up. Badminton will commence next week and sign-up sheets are currently on the Croc Board. Junior softball will commence in Week 7 with sign-up sheets also located on the Croc Board. Full details of training are located on the College app and Croc Board.

QG is introducing AFL into the sporting program and in Term 4 there will be a number of introductory sessions run in Weeks 2 and 3 and then Gala Day where games will be played, full details to come. The sign-up interest sheet will go onto the Croc Board at the start of Week 7. Any girls interested please must ensure they sign-up in Week 7 and come and see Ms Barnes if they want further details.

Volleyball Academy

The Clayfield Volleyball Academy continues every Monday from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the PE Centre. Please see Ms. Barnes if you wanting to participate. Any girls who choose to leave the program MUST send an email to confirm this or payments will still be added to your College fees.

Australian Volleyball has recently sent information regarding the Talent Identification trials that are due to be held later this month. Please see the flyer with full details on the College App for details.

Metropolitan North Trials

Met North has sent a number of communiques through this week with changes or cancellations to the scheduled trials. Sports that have been affected are Touch, Softball, Tennis and Athletics. Please see the College App for full details.

The list below shows the sports trials that are currently due to be held in Term 3, however, keep checking the Met North site for updates. Please note that these dates are for the Met North trials, so Independent North trials will be in the weeks leading up to these trials. Please click on the link to find out more or contact Ms Barnes if your daughter is interested in attending. These trials are for experienced players, not those wishing to try a sport.

Student Achievements

Sachi Smith

Sachi was recently selected for the Queensland team for L7 Artistic Gymnastics for the Border Challenge competition against the other states. Sachi’s team placed 1st at this event. We congratulate Sachi on a great individual effort, which assisted her team in winning this event.

Laura Poon

Laura was able to get in one day of competition at the Brisbane short course event prior to the lockdown where she received a number of top 5 placings and in doing so achieved two new personal best times in 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle. Laura's dedication and effort at training certainly has paid off.

It is wonderful to be able to share these remarkable achievements with you. If your daughter has achieved a significant result in her sport, please send an email labelled “Student Achievements” to Ms Christine Barnes - cbarnes1@clayfield.qld.edu.au so we can share this achievement with the wider community.
