Academic Excellence

New semester, new challenges

Working as a team

Our Semester Two Academic Excellence students have started the new semester at a hectic pace. All students are involved in the Tournament of Minds (TOM) competition which opened at the start of the term. The students have formed four teams and are working on their solution to their Challenges. Two teams have chosen to attempt the STEM challenge, where they must build objects that help them communicate with other lifeforms. They must also research rockets and the International Space Station. The other two teams are focussing on their Language Literature challenge. For this they are required to re-write a classic fairy tale and organise promotional material for it, including theme songs, posters, advertisements, etc. The students will need to present their solutions to the challenges to a group of judges at Edith Cowan, Joondalup on Saturday, 28 August.

Credit to all the students for their dedication to the competition. They have given time before school, lunchtimes and after school to attend extra sessions to be find the best solution and way to present it.

Thank you to Mrs Miranda and Miss MaGee for taking on being facilitators for the teams. Thank you also to Year 10 students, and previous TOM challengers Isabella Hulm, Isabelle Cayoun, Theodore Ciungawanara, Judyth Nawa for meeting the students and giving them some expert tips on how to work well as a team and do well at the competition.

Well done on the great start to the competition and to the Academic Excellence Program and best of luck for the rest of the competition!

Last week we were able to have our Academic Excellence Semester One celebration. The Semester One students were invited to a special morning tea where they were awarded their certificate of completion, a token for their effort and dedication to the program.

Year 7 Homework Help/ Peer Mentor Program

Year 7 Homework Help has returned this term on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30pm in the Library. All Year 7 students are welcome to attend. Possible aspects that students may seek assistance for include help with homework for any subject, revision of topics they are finding difficult and general organisation (diary, locker, etc). All they need to do is ask!

Thank you to the Year 9 Mentors that are volunteering their time to be available to assist the Year 7’s.
