Clyde Campus News

As week five draws to a close it feels like we are busier than ever, but it is a good type of busy. Science week brought us new knowledge and great fun while Glowrey and MacKillop Houses tested our skills and knowledge in kart racing and quizzes. A big thankyou to the Mr Barber and the Science team and Mrs Williams and Mr Rijs for their ingenuity in keeping lunch times busy and fun. Also my thanks go to Mr Antoine who continues to inspire and lead the campus community to do better as environmental ambassadors. Many students made their pledge this week to become active environmentalists setting the standard to clean up and protect our environment. I encourage all students and staff to make their pledge today. Kolbe House celebrated their feast day this week and later in this article, House Captains describe what it means to them. Year 11 and 10 students next week will take part in both leadership and reflection seminars to inform and support the next part of their journey as senior students in 2020. On to the next busy but always productive week.

Mario Karts – @ Clyde North

Round 1: After a very eventful lunchtime our first four houses battled it out today in the Mario Kart Championship!

Our winners for our first round of the competition were Kolbe, playing as Tanooki Mario, with a very impressive score of 42!

Following closely behind were Augustine (Dry Bones) with 38 and Mackillop (Blue Yoshi) on 34. Assisi, playing as Bowser Jr. made a great effort with 17 points.

Tomorrow at lunchtime in the Vis Com room our next four houses (Glowrey, Marian, Romero and Avila) will compete to try and get a spot in the grand finals!

Stay tuned for more updates then!

Round 2:

There was fierce competition for our championship again today with the last four houses battling it out for a spot in the finals! Coming in first place was Avila (playing as Link) on a total of 44 points. Next, Dry Bowser/Marian finished with 27 points followed by Glowrey (Waluigi) on 17 and King Boo (Romero) with 8 points.

This means that our grand finale will be held between the top two teams from each day. Congratulations to Kolbe, Augustine, Avila and Marian! The Grand Finale will take place on Thursday at lunchtime, stay tuned for the results next week.

Kolbe Feast Day: What it means to Us

Kolbe feast day is a beloved day in which the whole Kolbe house remembers Saint Maximilian Kolbe and how he has sacrificed his life for a stranger. We remember the influence of Saint Maximilian Kolbe in our lives and how we follow his path of ’sacrificing for the service of others'.  Kolbe feast day overall is a really important day for all Kolbe students as it is a day for resemblance of the great saint Maximillian Kolbe.

House Captain: Kashyap Contractor

Motto:

“Sacrifice for the Service of Others”

This exemplifies the ultimate sacrifice that Maximilian Kolbe gave to save the life of a fellow prisoner in Auschwitz concentration camp when he voluntarily traded places with the condemned man.

Kolbe House Prayer:

Lord, give us the gentle courage of Saint Maximilian who upheld what is right in the face of evil.

In giving his life for another, Saint Maximilian imitated you when you said “Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friend.”

May we see your face in those we serve.

Amen

Strive and Thrive Pastoral Care

The first session of the Strive & Thrive program for semester took place this week.

Year 11 & 12 looked at their VCE world through the lens of curiosity and creativity designing their own creative learning space:

Year 9 & 10 looked at leadership by unpacking the different types of leadership including skills and attributes. Students were tested by challenges that were both fun and clever. Well done to all who dared to be fearless and found ways to show their leadership this week.

Year 7 & 8 students explored resilience and discovered some great tips to build up their own resilience:

  • Keep a positive attitude – if you don’t already think it, keep reminding yourself the glass is half-full!
  • Do things for others / Be Kind – the saying is true, it’s better to give than to receive. Remember the ‘we’ not the ‘me’ and you’ll feel happier and stronger!  J
  •  Find a resilient role model – someone you can look up to admire for their ability to bounce back from difficulties – eg. Dylan Alcott, Rosie Batty, Katie Piper, Nelson Mandela (who said, Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again).
  • Be physically active – get off the couch and get moving. Physical movement / exercise is proven to help you feel more positive.
  • Play to your strengths – do what you’re good at. If you experience success and enjoyment in life, you feel happier, stronger and more able to deal with setbacks when they occur.

I wish you all a safe and productive week.
