VET Engineering at St. Peter’s College

The Certificate II Vocational Education and Training (VET) Engineering course at St. Peter’s College covers a wide range of topics. Unit 1 & 2 introduces students to engineering and Unit 3 & 4 provides students with the opportunity to engage with many facets of the engineering industry.

Students studying Unit 1 & 2 use a variety of machinery to create various products such as:

  • a metal scribe using the metal lathe
  • a mill plus grinder
  • a drill vernier using a pedestal drill and measurement tools
  • a trammel using the vertical vernier and lathe
  • a metal jug and a metal toolbox using the metal bender and guillotine
  • a plumb bob using the lathe and;
  • a G clamp using the mill.

Students studying Unit 3 & 4 need to incorporate all the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout Unit 1 & 2 to create a pneumatic engine using the lathe and mill.

The VET course also encompasses the theoretical side of engineering including machine usage and safety, technical drawing and calculations using formulae. Students really enjoy studying engineering as it is highly practical and empowers them to develop their skills in problem solving, communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.
