Year Prep - Year 2

Assistant Principal's Report

Junior School News

Welcome back to week 8!  And what an eventful and productive fortnight it has been.  Last Friday saw us run our first house event for 2019, which was a tug-of-war between the students and staff in each house.  Whilst our Preps, Ones and Twos weren't actually able to participate, they were certainly cheering on their houses enthusiastically from the sidelines and a great time was had by all.  This Tuesday also saw us conduct our first emergency evacuation drill for 2019.  All students and staff should be commended on the way that they calmly evacuated their classrooms and assembled in an orderly manner out on our grassed area.

Preps this week also had some special visitors into their classrooms as a part of our Responsible Pet Ownership program.  By participating, students were able to learn about the needs of household pets and how they can take care of them properly.  It was also wonderful this week for me to teach one of our Prep classes for a morning session. The school values of 'respect', 'responsibility' and 'resilience' were well known already, but also evident in their behaviours.  The excitement around learning was really pleasing too, and all students approached their learning enthusiastically.

Year One students have been learning all about number patterns and sequences in Numeracy this week, counting forwards and backwards by different numbers and starting at different starting points.  Walking along the Prep/One corridor today, I couldn't help but notice the Year One writing display board which is looking incredible, in no small part due to the fantastic writing that has been completed in class about the different seasons of the year.  I would strongly encourage parents to come along and have a look during our Open Afternoon next week.

Year Two students have maintained a strong place-value focus in Numeracy so far this term, but are about to shift their focus to addition and subtraction, whilst linking this with money and measurement. Teachers in Year Two have been working hard at fine-tuning their approach to running our Reader's workshops.  On learning walks, it is really evident that students know exactly what a 'good-fit' book is, what the expectations are during independent reading time and there is real evidence of them thinking about and responding to the texts they read in their Reader's Notebooks.

Just a reminder about our Open Afternoon this coming Wednesday, March 27th.  Classrooms will be open from 3.00pm and I look forward to seeing plenty of families there to celebrate the learning that has been taking place throughout Term One.  Our Easter raffle continues to run and will be drawn at our Open Afternoon.    Again, I look forward to seeing plenty of families in attendance.

Until next time, take care!
