Classroom News - Year 5

NAPLAN

We are very proud of all of our students for their positive attitude towards these assessments and the confidence they have displayed. Over the last 2 weeks these assessments have been completed online and the children have managed their devices skillfully and have been able to navigate through the 4 tests with ease. Congratulations Year 5!

Gala Day

This Friday many Year 5 students will travel to the Diocesan Gala Day to compete in soccer and netball. We wish all our students the best of luck and encourage them to enjoy the fun and friendship that come with the Gala Day experience.

Mary Help of Christians

This Friday is Mary's feast day and it is the day we celebrate her as the patron saint of our school. The whole school will be attending Mass at 9:15 am and we would love family members to join us.

STEP Day

Notes will be going home soon for the Year 5 STEP Day on Thursday 30th May at O'Connor Catholic College.

Over the last few years, O’Connor has conducted a transitional program

known as STEP (Stage Three Enrichment Program).

The transitional program is aimed at developing strategies that would assist

Stage 3 students in their transition into secondary schooling and also provide

an enrichment activity for Stage 3 students using the specialised facilities at

O’Connor.

There are many advantages in doing this. These include;

* greater links between Catholic Primary Schools and the Catholic

Secondary School

* improved relations within the Catholic Education Communities

* opportunities for Stage 3 students to experience O’Connor’s excellent

facilities and specialist teachers

* activities that enhance work done in the Stage 3 syllabuses

* Stage 3 students feeling more confident in the transition into

Secondary school.

The students will be provided with morning tea and lunch. If your child has

special dietary requirements, could you please supply their own morning tea

and lunch.

Students are asked to wear their sports uniform.

Please return the notes as soon as possible to the St Mary's School Office.

Curriculum

This week in English, Year 5 will begin their oral presentations. They will be speaking about the pros and cons of being famous. They have been focusing on persuasive texts this term and we look forward to hearing their arguments and opinions on this topic.

In Maths, we continue looking at the strategies we can use to solve a wide range of word problems.

In History, students have been studying events in Australia's history such as the Eureka Stockade and the Myall Creek massacre.

The focus in Religion this week has been the Easter Vigil and the symbol of light. Last week we focused on eternal life - the Church's teachings and our own understanding of what eternal life means.

Year 5 students have been enjoying developing their skills in PE in preparation for the Athletics carnival in Week 9, and have participated with enthusiasm in the activities offered by Jay Stone each Monday. During coming weeks we will hold our elimination trials for discus, shot-put, long jump and high jump.

Supplies

Many students are without lead pencils, glue sticks and erasers. We ask that you ensure that your child has these items.
