Sonia McNally - House Leader Columba

Welcome to Columba

For our first edition, featuring Columba, I think it appropriate to introduce our Student Leadership. Columba is so lucky to have such talented, enthusiastic and committed captains who love being a part of this house.

Our Captains are Teresa Cataldo and Shanaika Kasturisinghe.

Hey everyone,

We hope you are doing well during the ongoing pandemic and are enjoying the remote learning.

What makes Columba such a great house is being known for its house spirit and community involvement, Columba is a family rather than just a house. Younger year levels are encouraged to have a student voice within the house and are heard, just as much as the rest of the year levels within Columba. Because of this aspect, Columba students from year 7 to 12 are always willing to put their best foot forward and tackle any challenge they are faced with. We see that students are willing to get involved in activities in helping to increase house points.

Leadership within columba has taught us captains great responsibility, as leaders we are responsible for keeping the house connected, especially due to the current circumstances of COVID-19. This has definitely helped us to become better role models for surrounding peers. We also try our very best to communicate with each student of the house by regular checkups on homerooms and chats with each year level. Whilst communicating with students we have learnt to ask for their ideas and inputs so everyone no matter what year level is given a voice and able to contribute to house decisions. We as leaders find it easy to cooperate with our house making it easier for everyone to participate in events and activities.

As leaders we look forward to hopefully a more physical way of leading our house. This means we can return to our face to face chats with each homeroom and potentially an assembly before the year ends. We’d also love to get back to our fundraising and continue on from where we left off which was fundraising for caritas. Hopefully we will be back-to-school in no time to start our Make A Difference day fundraising. A few ways we hope to raise money would be to have some lunch time activities and food stalls. it would be good to get the whole house involved to participate with ideas and the production stages of raising money to be donated for a great cause, when we come back from remote learning.

We hope you all stay safe,

Of course, this year has been a challenge, but we are all striving to put a positive spin on what is occurring. Temperature checks and social distancing has become the new ‘norm’. Teachers and students alike cannot wait for life in Columba to get back to normal as we all miss our “family”
