Visual Art 

Year 5

The Term 1 Visual Art Unit of Inquiry was called 'The Art of Collage and Poster Design', which integrated with the Transdisciplinary theme- “Who We Are”. 

 

The Unit focused on the concepts of design with the use of perspective, composition, scale, colour and balance, inspired by the poster and collage art of various artists.

 

 

 

 

Students Participated In:

  • Abstract textural painting as the first component of the layers to be used in constructing their collage.
  • Pattern and Illustration applying detail and tonal elements as the second component of layers for their collage.
  • Magazine collecting inspired by the work of collage artist Max Malone.
  • A Final poster combining each component to complete their collage- painted texture, pattern, illustration and magazine images. This activity captured all design elements- composition, balance, colour and scale.

 'Who We Are'

  

 Students look at the concepts of Perspective and Responsibility- 

  

Perspective  

Students are asked to work within teams to encourage and take ownership of their own actions and reactions. Discover through activity how this impacts a game and performance outcomes.  

 

Responsibility 

Students are given the responsibility of having access to the PE Shed and equipment to help set up and mark out fields/game areas as well as safety in games. Students develop respect and tolerance towards others demonstrating open mindedness and caring for each other.

Modified Cricket and Softball Activities 

Fun Hockey Clinic 

  

Refine the basic and complex motor skills of Throwing, Catching and Striking in game situations. 

 

The children will begin to evaluate the performance of a peer during modified Cricket and Softball games and learn to provide constructive feedback based on performance criteria to assist skill development.

Basic greetings/classroom words (revision), SETSUBUN (Bean-throwing festival), Hiragana characters (A and K line), History of Japan (Samurai eras)  

 

PYP Unit Of Inquiry -  'WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME' 

 

Line of inquiry: Past events shape the present and future. 

  

Students will be able to

  • Describe what they did over the holidays saying TANOSHIKATTA DES. (It was fun) 
  • Spell their name in Katakana. 
  • Spell Japanese in the right order. 
  • Say and spell classroom words like KASHITE KUDASAI, TOIRE IIDES KA, MEZOO IIDES KA, etc 
  • Describe what SETSUBUN is, why, when, how Japanese people celebrate the festival. 
  • Make origami ONI (demons) to celebrate SETSUBUN festival. 
  • Recognise (say) and spell A, I, U, E, O in Hiragana. 
  • Recognise (say) and spell KA, KI, KU, KE, KO in Hiragana. 
  • Tell how Samurai started and ended in history of Japan. 
  • Tell how, why, when Japan opened its door to the outside world in history of Japan. 

 

Library  

The Year 5 students are encouraged to borrow books from the Library. The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation. 

 

 

The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information 

 

 

 

 

Music Program 

 

PYP Unit Of Inquiry:  'Who We Are' – Different Perspectives Influence How We Treat Each Other. 

 

Focus

Exploring music that celebrates different cultures and opinions that make up the World.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Students Will

  • Create a class playlist to celebrate and explore the diverse musical genres within the classroom. 
  • Explore the playlist songs – expanding musical knowledge by identifying tempos, rhythms, dynamics and pitches within the songs.  
  • Work on singing technique, explore how different dynamics, tempos and timbres can change the mood of the song.  
  • Each week we will have a different song to study to build up knowledge of musical elements and repertoire which align with the PYP UOI. Highlights include: We are the world, This Is Me, Can’t Stop the Feeling, We Don’t Talk About Bruno. 
  • Explore music that emphasizes the PYP UOI of student voice – being a universal citizen. Celebrating music from around the world – exploring music as a universal language which mirrors the PYP communicator focus.  
  • Bucket Drumming – to revise Rhythm knowledge – songs include: We Will Rock You & Surface Pressure.  
  • Aligned with Wellbeing Week the students have explored the importance of being respectful and celebrating their unique traits and cultures. This has been mirrored in the music performed in class: Over the Rainbow, What A Wonderful World & This Is Me.
