Sports News

I had a meeting with some local Physical Education teachers last week and we were talking about the impact the last 2 years have had on our students and looked anecdotally at how year levels were going with skills, games, cooperation, teamwork and general games sense.

While this is a sweeping generalisation it is clear that the impact of students not partaking in organised sport in those developmental years in programs such as Auskick, Netta, Basketball, Junior Blasters and under age level competitions that students do not have the same confidence and skill levels of students from previous cohorts, pre pandemic.

While students are still excited and willing to move and play games in Physical Education and sport classes it is clear that we need to do more in the outside of school space to get kids back into sport to help with skill and game development. We will also continue doing this as part of our school program.

When picking an activity or sport look at those that foster teamwork, cooperation, develop game sense, participation and promotes the notion of being fit, active and developing healthy lifestyle habits.

We are soon to cross over into winter sports and new seasons in a range of sports.

Please talk to your son or daughter no matter their age about getting involved in a sport. As a parent myself I encourage my kids to try as many sports as they can until they find something they really enjoy. Not everyone is built to be a footballer or netballer, but they could be a great hockey player or basketballer or golfer or tennis player or little athletics runner, they just need to find what they like to do.

But most importantly they could just play sport for the fun of learning to be part of a team and gaining some positive self esteem from learning to win and how lose by doing something with others. If they can do it with some friends or make some new ones even better.

I have made a list of some local clubs that many students and families from St Bedes are already a part of and hope you can encourage them to get involved in weekend games that will also include regular mid week training sessions.
