NAPLAN

Key dates and information for NAPLAN

Each year our Year 7 and 9 students participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing. This year we are required to move to NAPLAN online.  The online tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy will be conducted from May 11 until May 20.

In preparation for the tests, all year 7 and 9 students will participate in practice testing from 17 until the 24 March. This will provide our students and staff with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with testing online. They will complete a writing practice test and omnibus test (language conventions, reading and numeracy). Both of these practice tests are 42 minutes and will be administered in our computer rooms at school.

Assessment is an essential part of schooling. NAPLAN is a measure through which governments, education authorities, school, teachers and parents / carers can determine the level of student achievement in literacy and numeracy at that point in their schooling. At Sunbury College we use NAPLAN data as another piece in the puzzle to track growth and improve student outcomes.

Ideally, we would like to see all students take part in the testing, but understand if some carers / parents may wish to withdraw their child. If you do make the decision to withdraw your child, you must contact me on Fiona.scott-young@education.vic.gov.au prior to the testing and sign a withdrawal form. I will send another reminder about this closer to the time. If you child is eligible for a disability adjustment also contact me.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy.
