Principal's Message

A big welcome to our new Principal, Craig O'Bree

Dear parents, carers and students,

It has been fantastic to have students onsite and learning in face-to-face classes throughout this term. We have been impressed with the academic endeavour of our students and are looking forward to this application continuing throughout the year. Across the school we measure student application through work habit ratings that have a scale of always (4), usually (3), sometimes (2), rarely (1) and never (0). Students should aim to continually improve their work habit rating from their current position, with a rating of 3.75 – 4.00 be considered as the student being on track to achieve academic potential.

I want to firstly congratulate both 7B and 7C students who across their form had an average rating of 3.88

This was closely followed by a number of other forms from different year levels. Across the school, the average was 3.59 and out of the seven work habits the top three were:

  • brings correct equipment to class (3.77)
  • behaves well and respects the learning environment (3.71)
  • acts on feedback (3.70

Our review of work habits data consistently highlights that student work habits ratings give a strong indication of their overall academic performance.

We have been able to recognise and celebrate important events throughout this term with in person activities. These include International Women’s Day and Harmony day and I want to thank the school wellbeing team in coordinating these events.

We have also been able to reintroduce many extra-curricular activities that provide a breadth of learning opportunities. These activities also promote social inclusion, teamwork and enjoyment. Our Year 7 and 8 camps have been a fantastic success and a great way for students within year levels to make new friends, strengthen existing relationships and build a strong rapport with teachers.

  • 🏊‍♀️ Our swimming sports day was a great experience, with our year 12 students modelling the House spirit and our core values of respect, resilience, responsibility and endeavour.
  • 🤝Across the day they provided positive encouragement and embraced dressing up in costumes to add to the fun atmosphere.
In my time at Sunbury College, I don’t think I have ever seen participation in events so high. We actually extended the length of time we were at the pool this year to ensure we could fit in all the events. These extra-curricular activities provide a continuation of the learning experience outside the classroom and in our community.

There have been challenges this term, with significant amounts of students and staff members isolating. When students are at home and depending on their health, they have been able to complete different levels of essential learning. I want to thank families of those who are isolating for their prompt communication with the school and supporting their children at home with their learning, while juggling other work and family commitments. The strong partnership between students, parents and teachers is essential for building positive student outcomes.

I would like to wish our whole school community a safe and relaxing end of term break and look forward to the academic and wellbeing opportunities that our school will provide in term 2.

Best wishes,

Craig O’Bree
