AGTV GERMAN POETRY COMPETITION

In German lessons this week students from Levels 4 to 6 received information regarding the annual AGTV (Association of German Teachers of Victoria) German Poetry Competition.

This year the competition celebrates its 30th anniversary and is a wonderful opportunity for students of German to enhance their German language skills, boost their confidence and self-esteem, as well as uniting with other German students to share a love of language learning.

Students who would like to be involved in the competition are asked to select one of the poems from their year level to learn over the holidays.

If possible, students are encouraged to learn the poem by heart, so that they will be ready to recite their poem to Frau Lindner, Frau Shaw, Frau Taylor and Frau Schneider on

Thursday, 20th July

Students will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Pronunciation and Intonation

The words are pronounced correctly with confidence.

  • Diction and Phrasing

The phrases are distinct and appropriately emphasized e.g. tempo, stress, pauses.

  • Interpretation and Insight

How effectively the understanding of the mood and meaning of the poem is conveyed. This includes the overall tone and use of voice, eye contact, facial expressions and, in some instances, limited gestures as would be appropriate for a recitation to a German-speaking community who understands German.

Only three students from each year level (4 – 6) will be selected to represent Rangeview PS at the Regional Final. The Regional Final will be held in Term 3. More details to be announced soon. Should students be awarded a first or second place at the Regional Final they will then be invited to take part in the State Final (held at the Austrian Club in Heidelberg) on Saturday, 14th October (level 5 and 6 students only). All students involved in the competition will receive a certificate and prizes.

Viel Glück (good luck) and happy practicing!
