Year 1 Little Learners Love Literacy

This year, CSPS has extended the Little Learners Love Literacy phonics program into Year 1 and the students are making incredible progress! I visited the classrooms to see Little Learners in action and to ask the children what they think about what they are learning. I observed incredible engagement with the activities, well-embedded skills and knowledge and an attractive learning environment, rich with visual prompts like the Little Learners character and word cards.

Here’s what the students had to say about this approach to learning literacy:

Ivy - When we get a new card with a new sound, it’s really exciting!

Sebastian - I like repeating the words after Mrs Sochen.

Nochie - I like trying new things.

Isla - I like Let’s Spell, circling the letter then writing the word.

1B’s favourite character/sound cards are ‘mmmm… pies’ for the digraph /ie/ and ‘chicken and chips’ for the /ch/ sound.

Well done Year 1 teachers for pivoting your teaching so successfully, and students for the excellent progress you are making in learning to read, write and spell!
