Zanna & the Lost Code

On Wednesday of week 10, Brainstorm Productions visited our school to perform "Zanna & the Lost Code for all students. This exciting theatre experience aims to engage students in conversations about values, respect and responsibility, and inspire them to build safer and more positive online experiences. The performance is developed in collaboration with teachers and psychologists and is based on current research by the eSafety Commissioner and other cyber safety experts.

One of the key messages to students was that knowledge is power; we have the power to use our voices to 'change the game.'

Discussion points and conversation starters for families about the performance include

  • Online bullying - how did this make Zana feel?
  • Why didn’t Zana want to stand up to her friends?
  • Who can you tell if you are being bullied online?
  • What can you do to make the game options safer?
  • Why wouldn’t we talk to strangers online?
  • Why do we need to talk to someone about strangers online?
  • Games try to target the dopamines to keep us playing. How can we manage our self-control and ‘burst out’ of the dopamine bubble?

During the performance, the actors gave some helpful advice to the students including:

  • The age to join social apps is 13+
  • Using the report button
  • Take a dance break
  • Identifying a scam (if it seems too good to be true, it probably is)
  • Making sure your avatar is not a picture of yourself
  • Friends only option
  • The importance of blocking in-app purchases
