KLA News

This week we hear from the RE, HSIE & Maths Leaders of Learning

HSIE

Year 8 French

This term year 8 French students have been learning about the family. They have created their own family tree in French and have been practicing describing their family and family members.

In the coming week students will be practicing their French pronunciation skills by recording themselves describing their family.

Students have also been playing games and practicing their oral language skills with activities with their peers. They have also been enjoying watching the film Belle et Sébastion and learning about resistance fighters in the second world war and the different countries in which French is spoken. If you are chatting with one of our year 8’s ask them about why they are enjoying the film!

Year 9 RE

Year 9 students participated in their retreat last Thursday. It was held in the Trade Pavilion at the Armidale Showground, and led by Damo and Philippe ( Lasallian Mission Team members from Sydney), Jayden and Sophie (our school Lasallian Youth Mentors) with assistance from Year 11 Lasallian Youth Leaders.

The theme of the day was ‘Flourish Olympics’. During the day we participated in games and activities that explored this theme, helping us to understand how we can flourish in whatever we choose to become in our lives.

Thanks to Miss Mellowship and the teachers who organised the day, and made sure that it didn’t rain until the time we had to return to school, each carrying a chair!

Year 10 RE

The theme for Year 10 RE this term has been “The Church - Tradition, Challenge and Change”. In this unit students have been looking at different traditions in the Catholic Church, such as pilgrimages; challenges that the Church is facing, such as the decline in the number of people choosing to participate regularly in the Mass; and areas that we see the Church could change in, for instance who could become a priest in the future.

This unit can be very challenging (it says so in the title of the unit!) and reflects the understanding that like all living things, the Church cannot remain the same forever, but has (and will continue to) grow and evolve.

Mathematics

We have had a bunch of great things happening across our Mathematics classes this term. Here are a couple of the recent highlights.

Mathemagic!  Year 5 STEP Day Maths session

Year 5 students from our feeder schools had a great time investigating cylinders and Modius Loops.  A Mobius Loop is a strip of paper that has the ends joined together with a half twist.

We stuck two cylinders together, cut them into halves lengthways, and discovered that they resulted in a square!  Also, we tried the same thing with two Mobius Loops.  Surprise!  We ended up with two love hearts!  It was great fun with shapes.

Year 8 Volume

Concrete materials make such a difference when exploring geometry the fascinating world of geometry.

Recently our year 8 students were exploring volumes of solids. Here are some pictures of the action.
