Religious Education News

Mr Andrew May

The last two weeks have been very busy ones here at O’Connor. In addition to the regular round of classroom activities, we’ve been busy with the Year 9 retreat at the showground last Thursday; the staff retreat at St Albert’s College the following day; Reconciliation in the chapel on Wednesday 14th and involvement in the STEP day on Thursday 15th June! As I write we are planning the activities for our Founder’s Day celebrations on the last day of this term. It’s a particularly important day as this year is the 175th anniversary of the first Catholic Church here in Armidale.

Religious Education is not a subject that’s confined to a classroom but is part of the whole school experience at O’Connor. It isn’t a subject that’s limited to any specific application but instead, it’s something that students are able to take with them and benefit from, long after they leave the school.

One of the most important aspects of our Religious Education / Faith Formation program here at O’Connor is helping all members of the school community understand that our faith isn’t just confined to the four walls of the school chapel. At the moment we are engaged in the Vinnies Winter Appeal, encouraging all members of the community to donate items of warm clothing, blankets and other goods that can help the needy in our local area. These items will be donated during the Founders Day mass. If you do have ANYTHING at home that could be donated, I encourage you to send it into the school so that we are able to get it to Vinnies for distribution throughout the local community.

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year and a half it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church is closed as it is at present. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
